The Dourbie has carved steep gorges into the limestone cliffs of the Grands Causses near Nant; eleven circular walks, ranging from 8 to 22 kilometres, also start from the village. There are also historic buildings, a themed trail and farm produce. This combination helps you choose a focus for your trip between scenery, outdoor activities, culture and regional food.

The Dourbie, the Causses and circular walks

From Nant, the Dourbie flows through the limestone cliffs of the Grands Causses. There it has carved gorges with steep walls that separate the Causse Noir from the Causse du Larzac. The beaver was reintroduced to the Dourbie in 1987.

The guidebook “Sentiers Pédestres Vallée de la Dourbie, Causse du Larzac” features eleven circular walks starting from Nant, ranging from 8 to 22 kilometres. You can compare the routes by their stated distances. The guidebook also highlights panoramic views over the Causses, the surrounding valleys and the Cévennes massif.

The Sentier d'interprétation de Nant is titled “Chemin de l'eau et du Patrimoine” and has 18 information panels. Seventeen are in the village area, while the 18th is at the source of the Durzon, about 6 kilometres from the village centre. The title identifies water and cultural heritage as its themes; the distribution of the panels is also important when planning: the last one is much farther from the centre than the others in the village area.

Architectural history and culture

The Halle de Nant was rebuilt as a rectangular structure in 1706 and 1707. It is 30 metres long and 8 metres wide; twelve pillars and a round-arched arcade define its design. The date and precise measurements give you clear points of reference for placing the hall among the village’s historic buildings.

A guided tour with commentary through the medieval village centre offers another way to discover Nant’s history. In summer, the guided walks take place on Sundays only and last 1.5 hours. Sunday is therefore the relevant day of the week for this tour if you’re visiting in summer; check the specific dates before you travel.

The Eglise-abbatiale St Pierre de Nant can be visited free of charge, on a self-guided tour, from 1 January to 31 December 2026. Check the visiting arrangements before you travel. Le petit musée du Cinéma et sa Galerie displays rare and unique objects from the history of film, including equipment belonging to a leading French cinematographer.

Local produce and bistro

The Boutique et bistrot paysan combines the direct sale of farm produce with a bistro serving products from the shop. It also serves locally roasted Fairtrade coffee. Opening arrangements may vary by season; checking before your visit can help you plan.

Aromatic plant cultivation is also part of Nant: Les Aromatiques d’Homs grows these plants in a protected area. The local food scene therefore includes cultivation as well as direct sales and the bistro.
