Najac can be explored through two distinct facets: its striking architecture and activities along the paths and the Aveyron. The Forteresse Royale de Najac is an exceptional example of military defensive architecture from the 12th to 13th centuries. There is also a church and other buildings whose dates offer a chance to trace the history of the village.

Fortress, Church and Buildings

The Church of Saint-Jean-l'Évangéliste dates from the 13th to 14th centuries and is characteristic of Southern Gothic architecture. The Porte de la Pique is a fortified entrance dating from the 13th century. The Fontaine des Consuls is notable above all for its dodecagonal shape; it dates from 1344. Those who choose Najac for its architecture will find not only the fortress, but several clearly distinct examples from different centuries.

The Maison du Gouverneur houses the Centre d’Interprétation de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine (CIAP). The Maison du Gouverneur offers temporary exhibitions, guided tours, events and workshops for families and children. The Najac Museum has a different focus: it has permanent displays of tools, objects, archives and historical photographs from Najac and its residents. Together, the two buildings offer different perspectives on architecture, local history and the lives of the people who live there.

A guided tour of Najac and the Maison du Gouverneur lasts almost two hours. It begins at Place du Faubourg and follows the only street along the rocky ridge. This gives you a specific time frame for this activity, without conflating the tour with one of the separately described walking routes.

Hiking, the River and Activities

The 12-kilometre Les Châtaigneraies circular hiking route offers views of Najac; the return leg follows shaded paths along the Aveyron. PR22 is a moderate 11-kilometre circular hiking route with a stated duration of three hours. A shorter route can be found at the Ruisseau de la Vernhe: the hike there is 4.2 kilometres long, takes two hours and has 196 metres of elevation gain. Comparing distance, time and elevation gain helps you choose, since distance alone does not indicate the overall demands of a hike.

There is also a specific route for mountain biking: the Circuit Bano de Biau is a difficult 17-kilometre circular route with 340 metres of elevation gain and a stated duration of one hour and 40 minutes. When planning your day, you can compare these details with the hiking times without treating the different activities as equivalent routes.

On the banks of the Aveyron near Najac, you can picnic, fish and hike. The AAGAC nature centre in the Aveyron Gorges offers canoeing and kayaking, mountain biking, stand-up paddleboarding, high-ropes courses and Via Ferrata; check opening times in advance. Outside the peak season, you can take a walk, picnic or swim in the river at the leisure centre at PaĂŻsserou. Be mindful of local conditions; use is at your own risk.

Another option for a themed trip is the motorcycle circuit from Najac to Rodez. It passes through the gorges and then follows the Aveyron Valley towards Rodez. The river scenery is also a striking part of the local character: near Najac, the Aveyron winds between the Causse and the Ségala.

Practical Information and Local Tradition

Najac’s old village is not accessible by car. Take this restriction into account when planning your visit. Allow just under two hours for a guided tour; for the hikes, the stated distances, times and elevation gains can help you assess the different options.

If you would like to time your trip around a local tradition, you can consider the FĂŞte de la Fouace de Najac, held every year at the end of August. Large fouaces are carried through the village and then sampled. If you are planning your trip specifically for the festival, check the dates for your travel year.
