Martiel offers a variety of experiences for a stay, with its dolmens, Loc-Dieu and Lac de Bannac. The themes range from archaeological heritage and abbey history to trails through the landscape. If you would like to choose a focus before planning, you can decide between an interest in dolmens, a visit to Loc-Dieu and a walk around the lake.

Dolmens in the north and east

Thirty dolmens have been authenticated in Martiel. They are concentrated in the north and east of the commune, particularly in the Bois de Margues area. Three of Martiel’s dolmens are classified as historic monuments. Distribution and classification answer different questions: the spatial distribution shows where the dolmens are clustered; the classification identifies the protection status of three monuments. This provides a way to explore the dolmen heritage through its spatial concentration and the status of individual monuments.

Loc-Dieu: abbey history and visiting

The entire Loc-Dieu complex is protected as a historic monument. The Cistercian abbey dates from the 12th century and was fortified in the 15th century. The two dates refer to different stages: first the abbey’s construction, then its fortification. During a visit to Loc-Dieu, you can see the castle’s monumental vestibule, the cloister, the chapter house and the abbey church. The visit therefore includes both parts of the abbey and an area of the castle. Check the current opening arrangements before your visit.

Local history at the Salle Mémoire

The Salle Mémoire de Martiel offers another way to explore local history and cultural heritage, bringing together texts, photographs and objects. The materials on display may change. If you are planning to visit for a particular topic, ask the commune about the current selection. The Salle Mémoire is open to the public during the municipal library’s opening hours; coordinate your visit time with the commune. Those who prefer to explore history through texts, photographs and objects will find a different perspective here from that offered by the built heritage.

Trails around Lac de Bannac

Access to Lac de Bannac is free. A loop trail of about four kilometres can be walked or cycled by mountain bike. Apart from a few short wet sections, there are no major difficulties; the wet spots may vary depending on the season. The M6 loop around Lac de Bannac leads to the old washhouse in the hamlet of Fontaynous.

To choose a route, you can compare their lengths: the loop around the lake is about four kilometres long, while the Circuit de Ginoulhac is 7.5 kilometres and takes approximately three hours. The distances help compare the overall route lengths; for the Circuit, an approximate duration is also provided. On the lake loop, you can choose between walking and mountain biking and take the short wet sections into account. The commune may update route details for the Circuit de Ginoulhac, so check the description before setting out.
