Discover La Roque-Sainte-Marguerite through its village history and landscapes. The village centre lies on the right bank in the Gorges de la Dourbie; the commune’s Causse Noir is home to the rocky maze of La Cité de Pierres. The area also features historic buildings and a range of ways to explore the landscape. This gives you several options to focus on when planning your visit: village history, different ways to visit La Cité de Pierres, or the landscape setting of Trail N°08.

Village Centre and History

The Château de La Roque-Sainte-Marguerite dates back to the Middle Ages, with origins in the 11th century. As it is privately owned, it can be viewed from the outside. The château grounds, which are open to the public, are a separate matter: the church of La Roque is located on the Esplanade du Merlet within the grounds. A sloping, stone-paved calade leads up to it. This distinction is useful for finding your way around: visiting the château means viewing it from the outside, while the church is within the grounds that are open to the public.

Among the old houses, you can also see a typical communal bread oven dating from the 16th century. It is a different historical landmark from the château: while the château has medieval origins, the communal oven is a visible feature among the houses. The time gap between the 11th and 16th centuries places these two landmarks in different eras. Together, they provide a historic building and another visible feature of the village, though they represent different aspects of local history.

Rocky Landscapes and Trails

La Cité de Pierres, a rocky maze with five signposted walking trails, lies in the commune’s Causse Noir. There is also a narrated ride on a small train, discovery games, a mini ropes course as a play area, and rest areas. The walking trails and train ride offer different ways to explore; games and the play area complement these options, while the rest areas are another part of the visit. When planning, you can decide whether to focus on signposted trails, a narrated ride, or one of the other activities listed.

Trail N°08 runs across the Larzac Plateau and the Causse Noir. It lies within the core zone of the Causses and Cévennes Cultural Landscape of Mediterranean Agro-Pastoralism. The trail is therefore described both by its route through two landscape areas and by the cultural classification of this landscape. Unlike La Cité de Pierres, which offers several ways to visit, the trail is defined by its route and its location in the core zone. If you are choosing between the Cité and the trail, you can compare their different focuses: activities around the rocky maze, or a route connected to the landscape and cultural landscape.

Geographically, the village centre, the Cité, and the trail also refer to different locations: the village centre lies on the right bank in the Gorges de la Dourbie, the Cité is in the commune’s Causse Noir, and the trail runs across the Larzac Plateau and the Causse Noir. This distinction helps separate the village’s location from the commune’s landscape and the trail’s route.
