La Capelle-Balaguier lies west of the bastide of Villeneuve and between Villefranche-de-Rouergue and Cajarc; both towns are 13 kilometres away. The village offers two distinct reasons to choose it as a destination: the history of a once-fortified settlement and the hiking trails through Le Frau, as well as the Les Mas du Causse route. The Fontvieille washhouse adds a tangible site to these themes. If you would like to combine local history with a hike lasting several hours, you will find historical points of interest here and a route with a stated walking time.

Local history between the gate and the keep

La Capelle-Balaguier was once a fortified settlement surrounded by a group of houses, with a tall square keep at its centre. The historic entrance passed through a vaulted gate beneath today’s town hall, which was formerly a presbytery. The keep was completely demolished in the 1950s. The contrast between its former central position and its complete demolition makes the site’s transformation over time tangible. The keep’s central position helps you understand the former settlement as an enclosed complex.

Le Frau: historic grant and present-day use

Another historical reference point is 2 May 1448: on that day, Gaspard de Balaguier granted the 600-hectare area of Le Frau to the inhabitants of La Capelle-Balaguier. Today, following land consolidation, Le Frau is used for arable farming and grazing. These two details offer different ways into local history: the architecture of the fortified village on the one hand, and the area’s development and use on the other. At Le Frau, the scale shifts from a central structure to a larger area with its own agricultural use.

The Fontvieille washhouse

The former Fontvieille washhouse is another place to discover in La Capelle-Balaguier. A local maintenance report from 2022 describes a storage tank fed by a spring that supplies two basins. The site offers an architectural perspective distinct from the gate and keep: the focus is on water supply and basins, rather than fortifications.

Hiking trails and the Les Mas du Causse route

Two different figures can help you plan your time. About 30 kilometres of marked hiking trails run through Le Frau. The Les Mas du Causse route has a stated walking time of 3 hours and 45 minutes. The distance refers to the marked trails in the area, while the time indicates how long a specific route takes; the two figures answer different planning questions. The stated walking time may vary depending on conditions and pace. Check current route conditions before setting out.

The Les Mas du Causse route is marked in yellow by CDRP12 volunteers in accordance with the FFRandonnée charter and leads to the Templar Cross. It follows old paths on the Causse de Salvagnac, worn by earlier carts; dry-stone walls and dense, fragrant boxwood line the paths. The named destination adds a specific cultural and historical point of interest to the route description.
