A grid of perpendicular streets, pink granite and a bridge of ancient origin give La Bastide-l'Évêque several tangible ways to explore its history and landscape. There is also a guided tour with a copper-hammering demonstration, a year-round route with an audio guide, and a challenging 16-kilometre hike. The different themes and formats can help you plan your trip around your interests.

Bastide History and Southern Gothic Architecture

La Bastide-l'Évêque was founded in 1280 as an episcopal bastide under the direction of Raymond de Calmont d'Olt, Bishop of Rodez. The town retains the orthogonal street plan characteristic of bastides. In other words, its layout is arranged at right angles, offering a tangible way to explore the town's history alongside its founding date and episcopal character.

The Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste offers another perspective on the history of the town's architecture. This Southern Gothic building dates from the 14th to the 16th century and is made of pink granite. Its bell tower rises above a porch. Its style, building material and structure are distinct architectural features that help describe the church without reducing its long construction period to a single year.

Walking Route, Pilgrimage and Copper Craft

The “Oreilles en Balade” route can be explored year-round using a free audio guide or QR codes at the marked listening points. These are two different formats: you can use the audio guide or scan the QR codes at the stops. As access arrangements may change, check the latest information before your visit.

A fixed date is also part of the town's cultural history: the pilgrimage to Saint Dalmas takes place every year on 13 November. The tradition has continued for centuries. If you are interested in the pilgrimage, you can use this date as a specific point of reference when planning your trip.

Copper craftsmanship takes centre stage at Les Martinets du Lézert. The guided tour includes a copper-hammering demonstration. This experience is different both from the audio-guided route and from exploring the architecture: here, a demonstration of a craft process is part of the visit.

Gorges, Bridge and Hike

The Ségala plateau near La Bastide-l'Évêque is bordered by the Aveyron gorges and the Lézert valley. Pont du Cayla lies within the Aveyron gorges: this picturesque stone bridge of ancient origin is set in green surroundings along the GR62B route. Here, a scenic setting, a historic structure and a clearly identified route come together.

Another way to explore the landscape is the “Le Cayla et la vallée de l'Aveyron (La Bastide l'Evêque)” hike. It is a difficult 16-kilometre circular hike. Both the distance and difficulty are important when deciding whether to take it on: this route is considered a challenging hiking option. This makes it distinct from the cultural visits and their different formats.
