Grand-Vabre is first mentioned in a charter of Louis the Pious, signed in Aachen on 8 April 819. The charter also reports that Dadon withdrew to a place called Grandvabre. It provides an early historical reference point; further cultural discoveries range from the parish church, with sections dating from the 11th century, to ceramics made in Grand-Vabre.

Churches and architectural history

The parish church of Grand-Vabre is dedicated to Saint Clair and Saint Roch; its oldest sections date from the 11th century. The Chapelle Saint-Léonard de Monédiès also dates from the 11th century. Its ruins were overgrown with scrub before restoration began; the work took 15 years. The restored pre-Romanesque chapel has a rectangular nave and a rectangular choir, separated by a triumphal arch, as well as narrow openings. The term “pre-Romanesque” places the building in its historical period; the nave and choir describe its layout, and the triumphal arch marks the division between them.

The Grand-Vabre–Monédiès walk follows the Monédiès stream and reaches the restored chapel by the water. Another highlight of the landscape is the Chapelle Saint-Roch, which stands nearby on the heights of Roucan and offers views across the valley. Also nearby, the statue of Notre-Dame de la Paix rises on a panoramic rocky outcrop. It was erected in 1945 and can be reached via a path behind the Chapelle Saint-Roch. The timeline stretches from the 819 charter, through the oldest sections of the parish church and the 11th-century Chapelle Saint-Léonard, to the statue of 1945.

Fishing on the Dourdou

Fishing is permitted year-round on the Dourdou stretch between Conques and Grand-Vabre, which is classified as category 2 for fishing. Fish found there include trout, gudgeon, minnows, barbel and chub; trout are also stocked. The Les Pélies fishing site carries the national “parcours famille” (family-friendly site) label. A car park immediately beside the pontoon makes it easier for people with reduced mobility to access it. Two details are useful for planning: year-round fishing applies to the Dourdou stretch, while the accessibility provision applies to the Les Pélies pontoon.

Cycling route and paddling

The Voie de Conques (V86) starts in Grand-Vabre and runs from there through the Dourdou valley towards Bozouls and Espalion. Check current route conditions before setting out. ASVOLT offers stand-up paddleboard hire on the water at Grand-Vabre; check availability before your trip.

Ceramics from Grand-Vabre

The Poterie de la Confluence exhibits Raku and faience ceramics made in Grand-Vabre. The workshop produces household and decorative items, as well as jewellery, from coloured faience and wood-fired Raku ceramics. Those interested in how they are made can explore coloured faience and wood-fired Raku ceramics as two distinct specialities.
