Goutrens brings together Georges Rouquier’s film history and a glimpse of rural life before mechanization. The films, a venue dedicated to the director, and historical portrayals of everyday life offer different ways to explore the area’s culture and history; walking routes add landscapes and specific destinations to the experience.
Film history at the same location
Farrebique and Biquefarre were filmed in Goutrens, at the same location and with the same amateur actors, 38 years apart. The time gap and the shared cast make the connection between the two films especially tangible: anyone interested in Georges Rouquier’s work can explore two productions linked by the same location and actors, but made decades apart.
The Espace Georges Rouquier is a museum dedicated to the filmmaker. It presents 58 minutes of film excerpts across about ten screens, along with a screening room, interviews, and documents about his work. Film clips are thus shown alongside interviews and supplementary material. The venue introduces Rouquier’s work not only through individual excerpts, but also through interviews and documents that offer further insight into his work.
Rural life before 1950
“Nos campagnes autrefois” depicts rural life before 1950, that is, before the mechanization of agriculture. Exhibits include agricultural tools pulled by animals, harnesses, and clothing from an earlier era. Reconstructed rooms complement these objects: they include a cellar, a blacksmith’s workshop, a chicken yard, a kitchen, and a bedroom, as well as a school and a town hall. Soundtracked scenes or figures add to the display. In this way, visitors encounter different aspects of everyday life at the time: farming tools sit alongside living spaces and places of community life. Anyone interested in rural history will find not only agricultural objects here, but also reconstructed rooms and scenes.
Circular walks and Gou'Trail
The Au Pays de Georges Rouquier circular trail starts at Place de l'Église in Goutrens. Check trail conditions before setting out. Another circular trail, Les Moulins de l'Alzou de Goutrens, leads to three mills and the Farrebique farm, made famous by Georges Rouquier. The trails have distinct themes: Au Pays de Georges Rouquier starts in the village center, while Les Moulins de l'Alzou links the mills with the farm. When choosing, you can consider whether you would rather focus on the village or on these destinations.
The 2026 Gou'Trail in Goutrens includes 12- and 21-kilometer trail-running routes. The 12-kilometer route passes through the rolling hills of the Rougier and the Vallon’s typical vineyards; these landscape details refer specifically to this distance. The program also includes a 10- to 15-kilometer walk, with a flexible start between 3 and 4 p.m. The program therefore offers different distances and a dedicated start window for the walk. The routes and times listed refer to the 2026 edition. For later editions, check the dates and program again.
Church and monument in Goutrens and Cassagnes-Comtaux
A 15th-century processional cross from Cassagnes-Comtaux is kept in the church of Goutrens. Cassagnes-Comtaux is also home to the Dolmen de la Serre, which is listed as a historic monument. It is accessible on foot and by bicycle; signposted routes start in Cassagnes-Comtaux and at the La Croix de Bel viewpoint. The place names help distinguish the sites: the cross is kept in the church of Goutrens, while the dolmen is in Cassagnes-Comtaux.
