Cransac brings together the history of mining and thermal bathing with social history, contemporary art and trails through a landscape shaped by former open-cast mining. This gives visitors several themes to explore during their stay: memories of local history, public art and trails that offer a different perspective on Cransac. A particularly striking feature is that mining is not only covered in the museum, but is also part of the landscape history of the ForĂȘt de la Vaysse.

Cransac’s History at the Museum

The MusĂ©e Les MĂ©moires de Cransac explores the local history of mining and thermal bathing. It also covers social history, changes to the landscape, and individual and collective memories. The themes are presented through models, plans, photos, films and eyewitness accounts. This brings together different forms of interpretation: depictions of the town and its history, as well as personal accounts. The museum offers both self-guided visits and guided tours for groups and other visitors. It is also part of the “Art dans l'espace public en Aveyron” route.

A Place of Remembrance and Contemporary Art

The Monument-MĂ©moire stands on the former mining site near Shaft No. 1 and is 34 metres high. It is freely accessible year-round in the Parc Thermal. It thus connects a specific former mining site with a freely accessible place of remembrance. La Triangulaire de Cransac offers a different perspective: it is a contemporary public artwork organised into three sections. The two works show different cultural facets of Cransac—a monument with a direct connection to mining and a contemporary work with a tripartite structure.

Walking Options

The themed walk “Cransac-les-eaux” starts at the town hall square and is 1 km long. This makes it a short, clearly defined walking option. The Conques–Toulouse long-distance hiking trail passes through Cransac, continues to neighbouring Aubin, and then on to Peyrusse-Le-Roc. The two options differ in scale and type: one is a one-kilometre themed trail with a named starting point; the other is a long-distance route that continues through several towns. If you are planning time on foot, you can consider these as separate options.

The Landscape of the ForĂȘt de la Vaysse

The ForĂȘt de la Vaysse consists of a series of reforested open-cast mining pits. The thermal spa facility is located at the edge of the forest. The Office de Tourisme et du Thermalisme has walking guides for circular routes in the ForĂȘt de la Vaysse. Availability may change, so check with the Office before your visit. The Monument as a place of remembrance and the changing landscape of the ForĂȘt offer different perspectives on mining.
