Explore Calmels-et-le-Viala through two themes: the area's cultural history and trails through the Rougier landscape. Statue menhirs, a chapel on the banks of the Dourdou and the Ruminier copper lode represent different historical landmarks. For outings, there is a specifically described hike, a named mountain bike trail, as well as walking paths and a voie verte. When planning, you can therefore choose whether to follow a set circuit, seek out views by bike or focus on local heritage sites.

Trails and Landscapes in the Rougier

Calmels-et-le-Viala is situated in the Rougier landscape, with wooded hills and fertile valleys. Walking paths and a voie verte make it possible to discover landscapes and viewpoints in the heart of the Rougier de Camarès. The options therefore extend beyond a single circular walk: you can take in the landscape on foot or along the voie verte. If you are planning time outdoors, you can consider these options alongside the local cultural attractions.

The circular trail Sur les chemins des femmes de la terre is an easy 7.6-kilometre hike that takes two hours. It starts and ends in Le Viala du Dourdou and passes through Calmels-et-le-Viala. The distance and duration provide a concrete guide for planning this hike. Check the route details before setting off.

A different way to get around is the mountain bike trail VTT N°10 – Le Bois Noir. It offers views of Calmels-et-le-Viala and the Len Valley. This lets you distinguish between the circuit described as an easy hike and a mountain bike route with views of the village and valley, without treating the two as the same kind of outing.

Traces from Different Eras

The statue menhirs discovered in Calmels-et-le-Viala date from approximately 2000 to 3500 BC. On the banks of the Dourdou stands the Chapelle de Calmels, which dates from around the 12th century. The menhirs and the chapel thus point to very different periods: prehistoric finds and a medieval building. Visitors interested in heritage will find two distinct historical points of interest here, without conflating them into a single era.

The Ruminier copper lode is also part of the area's history. It was mined in Gallo-Roman times. Further mining took place from 1911 to 1913, again in 1930 and, most recently, in 1967. These dates show several separate periods of mining activity at the copper lode. Along with the older statue menhirs and the Chapelle de Calmels, they offer a glimpse into different chapters of local history rather than a single historical theme.

A Farm Visit with a Guide

La Ferme du Bousquet is an organic family farm. Guided farm tours led by a farmer are available. If you would like to include a visit in your plans, arrange the details in advance. This keeps the farm tour as a separate offering alongside the hike, mountain bike trail and heritage sites; it does not need to be combined with them into a fixed day itinerary.
