At the foot of the Tabe Massif and the Plantaurel Hills, on the Touyre River, lies Villeneuve-D'olmes. The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption, the Calvaire and a historic water-conveyance canal offer insights into the history of the area and its buildings. Les Tisserands adds a mountain-bike and e-bike loop with a clearly described route. Here, you can explore cultural topics as well as an activity with a specified route and elevation gain.

Landscape and local landmarks

The location brings together three distinct landscape features: the Tabe Massif, the Plantaurel Hills and the Touyre River. Villeneuve-D'olmes lies at the foot of the massif and hills, as well as on the river. The Touyre is not only part of the area’s geographical setting; it also features in local history. A historic canal diverted water from the river and returned it after use. The river can therefore be viewed both as a landscape feature and as part of a specific historical story.

Church of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption

The present-day church is characterised by a nave without side aisles, three side chapels on the south side, a tower-bell tower on the west side and a semicircular apse. A nave without side aisles is a main space without parallel side aisles; the chapels extend it laterally. The tower-bell tower and apse are other distinctive parts of the building. Together, these details give a clear picture of its layout without conflating the different architectural features.

The church also has eleven stained-glass windows dating from the early 20th century. This date refers to the windows. You can therefore consider the building’s description in two aspects: its layout and the dating of part of its furnishings. For those interested in cultural history, the windows add their own historical dimension to the architectural details.

Canal and Calvaire

The lords of Lévis built a water-conveyance canal no later than the beginning of the 15th century. It diverted water from the Touyre and returned it to the river after use. The sequence is important: water was taken from the Touyre, carried through a canal and then returned. This makes the river part of the area’s history, not just a feature of its landscape.

Another historical landmark is the cross erected on this site on 18 April 1851. Since then, the place has been known as “le calvaire”. To find it, continue from the old town centre past the bridge in the direction of Bénaix. The date of the cross is thus paired with specific directions starting from the town centre.

Cycling Les Tisserands

Les Tisserands is a 17.3-kilometre loop for mountain bikes and e-bikes, with 673 metres of positive elevation gain. It starts at the car park by Villeneuve-D'olmes town hall. The distance and specified elevation gain give you two concrete figures to help plan your ride. The route description was updated on 17 January 2024; check trail conditions locally before setting out.

The route follows the GR107 and GRP trails of the Tabe Massif to the foot of the Château de Montségur. The named trails and endpoint provide additional orientation alongside the route’s length. It is described as a loop, and its route leads to the foot of the château. If you are weighing cultural history and cycling as different priorities for your stay, you will find a clearly quantified ride here alongside the church, canal and Calvaire.
