Rallye Ane combines a nature walk in Trémoulet with puzzles and encounters with donkeys. Two other themes also shape a stay here: the church, with its building history dating back to the 10th century, and the area’s natural features, including the Natura 2000 protected area and the Hers ZNIEFF. This offers a perspective ranging from an active outing to local history and natural heritage.

Natural areas with different designations

Part of the municipality of Trémoulet lies within the “Garonne, Ariège, Hers, Salat, Pique et Neste” Natura 2000 protected area, designated as Special Area of Conservation FR 7301822. The ZNIEFF along the River Hers includes the river course and well-preserved sections of the floodplain, with riparian woodland, meadows and gravel pits. Trémoulet is one of the municipalities administratively affected by this ZNIEFF. The area’s notable natural assets include the European otter (Lutra lutra) and the Pyrenean desman (Galemys pyrenaicus). The areas differ in their geographical scope: Natura 2000 covers part of the municipality, while the Hers ZNIEFF includes the river course, floodplain areas and the species mentioned above.

Rallye Ane: walk and solve puzzles

Rallye Ane is a nature walk involving a trail of clues and encounters with donkeys. This walking rally is designed for families or friends. The games and puzzles focus either on the accompanying donkey or on the region, giving the walk a playful element as well as a connection to nature. The donkeys carry luggage and picnics in their saddlebags. The outing therefore combines the puzzles with a practical task for the animals, rather than simply having them along as companions. If you would like to include Rallye Ane in your travel plans, check before your trip whether it is available for your dates.

Escargoline rides

An Escargoline drawn by donkeys provides transport for people with limited mobility. Seat belts allow children to ride in it. In 2017, Gîte-Âne d'Ariège offered an Escargoline for outings in Trémoulet. Before your trip, check whether this service is still available.

The church and village history

Trémoulet’s church was built in the 10th century; 1225 is the year it was first officially mentioned, in a papal bull issued by Honorius III. It was renovated in 1862, and its roof was replaced in 2002. This timeline distinguishes the building date, the first official mention and later works. During work on the church, stones were discovered behind the plaster and decorative painting.

The village festival also has a timeline: it took place in 2023 and 2024. The 2024 edition featured a three-day programme with a concert, a DJ and fireworks. If you would like to include a festival visit in your trip, check the dates and programme for your chosen edition before setting your travel dates.
