In Sentein, church architecture and pastoral landscapes meet mining heritage and a multi-day circular hike. When travelling by road, access is only via the D4 departmental road. Which aspect of the town you focus on can shape the character of your stay: historic buildings, the landscape beyond Sentein, or a longer tour with a destination rooted in industrial history.
Church architecture and former fortifications
The fortified church in Sentein has a 42 m-high bell tower and is listed as a Monument historique. The former fortifications of the Notre-Dame church include two surviving square towers. Inside, Notre-Dame features remarkable frescoes. These details offer different perspectives: the bell tower gives a sense of the building’s height, the towers recall its former fortifications, and the frescoes are part of the interior decor. The church architecture cannot therefore be reduced to a single striking exterior feature; its historic fortifications and interior also shape Sentein’s cultural character.
The pastoral landscape of Laspé
Beyond Sentein lies the Laspé landscape area, with remarkably well-preserved pastoral landscapes. Barns and dry-stone walls are part of this scene, along with hazelnut hedges and herds. Buildings, vegetation and livestock are distinct elements of the pastoral landscape. This offers a different focus from church architecture: in Laspé, the features of the pastoral landscape take centre stage. Those who want to understand Sentein not only through its historic buildings but also through its landscape will find a distinct perspective there.
Tour du Biros and mining heritage
The Tour du Biros is a marked 53 km circular hike taking four days. It starts and ends at the d’Anglade car park in Sentein and follows the yellow-and-red markings of the GR de Pays. Its destination is the Bentaillou mines, an industrial heritage mining site at an altitude of 1,900 m. Zinc and silver-bearing lead were extracted there in the 19th and 20th centuries. For travel planning, the tour thus combines a clear time frame with a specific historical theme: mining at the mines.
Grotte de la Cigalère
The Grotte de la Cigalère lies at an altitude of about 1,700 m at the foot of the Bentaillou mines. The currently mapped underground cave system extends for more than 10,000 m. Large gypsum formations make the cave a site of international recognition and high scientific and conservation value; special protective measures therefore apply there. While the historic extraction of zinc and silver-bearing lead is the focus at the mines, the gypsum formations, their scientific significance and their preservation shape the perspective on this site.
Transhumance in the valley
Transhumance also offers a seasonal point of reference for travel planning. In early June, visitors can follow the herds through the valley. Transhumance includes a festive meal at which livestock farmers share the valley’s history. The timing differs from that of the four-day circular hike: early June is the relevant period for watching the herds, while the Tour du Biros is designed as a multi-day undertaking. Future dates and programme details may vary. If you plan your stay around the transhumance, check the dates and programme in advance.
