Created in 1985, Lac de Montbel is an artificial reservoir covering 570 hectares. Forests, valleys and wild beaches line its shores. Here, water and landscape meet at the lake, while churches and a monument add a different dimension. At Lac de Montbel, discover nature by the water; churches and a monument offer insights into Montbel’s cultural heritage.

Lac de Montbel: Nature and Activities

At the lake, the Association des Naturalistes de l’Ariège has set up an observation station where visitors can watch the area’s many birds. This adds a specific nature focus to the views of the lakeshore.

Les Rives de Montbel offers stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing, pedal boating, sailing and boat rental. The range includes different ways to spend time on the water. There is also a beach supervised in July and August. If swimming is important to your plans, this seasonal timeframe is a useful distinction from the landscape features described as available year-round.

You can also plan a land-based outing around the lake: a 16-kilometre loop circles Lac de Montbel and can be travelled on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. This offers alternatives to water sports, with a route around the lake. The route from Camon to Montbel is open to all non-motorised forms of transport.

Churches and a Monument in Montbel

Saint-Vincent de Montbel Church has been mentioned as “ecclesia de Montebello” since 1318. Its present appearance dates to its reconstruction in 1846 and renovations in the 20th century. Nine contemporary stained-glass windows with geometric decoration add a later design element to its architectural history. The church thus brings together different periods.

Based on its features, Saint-Sernin du Villaret Chapel can be attributed to the Romanesque period of the 11th to 12th centuries. It houses a painting of the Adoration of the Shepherds. From the 15th century until 1970, Saint-Sernin du Villaret was an outlying chapel of Saint-André du Peyrat; the chapel was completely renovated in the 1990s. Its architectural history, former ecclesiastical function and painting each give this place a distinct cultural significance.

Another work with a character of its own is Montbel’s war memorial. Ariel Moscovici created the unique granite sculpture in 2002 under the title “Entre deux montagnes”. Together with the two churches, it broadens the cultural focus to include a contemporary work.

Seasonal Cuisine by the Lake

Au Coin Sauvage at Lac de Montbel serves local, seasonal cuisine as well as homemade waffles and sweet pastries. It offers a dining option with a different focus from water sports and cultural heritage.
