Bat conservation, a marked circular trail and precisely located cultural landmarks give L'Herm a range of points of interest. When planning your trip, it is worth choosing according to your priorities: access to the cave is subject to restrictions, the trail can be assessed by its length and elevation gain, and the historic sites provide specific landmarks. En Selle adds horse rides to this selection. This way, you can choose based on the topics that interest you rather than following a set itinerary.
Nature and trails
The Grotte de L'Herm is protected as a Natura 2000 site because it is home to numerous bat species. The timing of your visit is crucial. The municipal notice dated 20 March 2022 states that visits are prohibited during the bats’ extended breeding and roosting periods. Visit permits may be issued for two weeks in March and during September. Check access conditions before planning your visit.
The marked Boucle par le Pas del Theil circular trail is 6.8 km long and has an elevation gain of 186 metres. Its length and ascent are specific features you can use to plan your walk; trail conditions may change, so check them before setting out. The cave and the trail therefore involve different preparation considerations: access is the main concern for the cave, while the trail’s distance and elevation gain provide an initial guide.
Another named trail is Lo camin de las parets e deus boishs. The Office de Tourisme de Foix-Varilhes manages this community trail, and the office’s measures contribute to its upkeep. The trails thus offer different points of reference: the Boucle has a marked route, length and elevation gain, while management and supplementary maintenance are the focus for Lo camin.
Horse rides on the trails of the Ariège
En Selle is based in L'Herm and offers horse rides on the trails of the Ariège for different profiles and all experience levels, from ages seven to 77. This means the local selection includes an activity with horses as well as the circular trail. When deciding, you can consider the features specified for each: the hike has a stated distance and elevation gain, while the riding offer specifies an age range and experience levels. These provide different ways to match your interests and personal plans.
Washhouse and war memorial
The restored washhouse in Baragne is on Chemin de La Calmette, just behind the hamlet of Baragne. The Monument aux morts commemorates the wars of 1914–1918 and 1939–1945 and was erected in late 1920. It faces west and stands to the right of the entrance to the parish church, in the cemetery. A sculpted Latin cross is set on its base.
The two sites have different points of interest: the Chemin de La Calmette and the hamlet of Baragne locate the washhouse, while the memorial’s position in the cemetery, its west-facing orientation and the cross on its base are specific features. This allows the everyday structure and the act of remembrance to be considered as distinct cultural and historical topics, without combining them into a single story.
