Aucazein combines the character of a relatively open village in the Bellongue valley with a section of the GR® 78 that leads into the village centre. When planning a trip, the village itself, the hiking route and the natural landscape of the region therefore come together; at the same time, the features of the village can be distinguished from those of the larger Massif de l’Arbas.

Village Structure and Notable Buildings

The village layout is centred on a main street. Two other streets run perpendicular to it and parallel to the slope. Both the main axis and the direction of the slope therefore shape the layout of the village in the valley.

Aucazein’s village landscape is relatively uniform and remarkable. The church stands above the village, while the renovated mill occupies a prominent position within it. The two buildings create different spatial focal points: the church stands out because of its position above the village, while the mill is distinguished by its prominent place within the village fabric.

Public spaces are also part of Aucazein’s character. The river is highlighted through various public-space designs; overall, the strong presence of public spaces is another feature of the village.

Following the GR® 78 through Aucazein

In Aucazein, the GR® 78 reaches the D618. On the way down to the village, the route follows a road; after the bridge, it reaches the village centre. In the direction of Buzan, the hiking trail leaves Aucazein along a wide path. The route can therefore be followed from arrival in the village to the next section: the road and bridge lead to the centre, then a wide path continues towards Buzan.

If you include the GR® 78 in your plans, check the route conditions before setting out. The D618, the bridge and the village centre are specific reference points along the route through Aucazein; the continuation towards Buzan is described as a wide path.

Massif de l’Arbas and Fishing Spots

Aucazein is one of the communes in the Massif de l’Arbas ZNIEFF (Type 2) and a member commune of the Parc naturel régional des Pyrénées Ariégeoises. The massif covers 27,000 hectares of hills and mountains, 60 percent of which is forested. Its karst landscape contains a variety of rocky habitats and associated biotopes, home to specialised calcicolous plants and animals.

Another specific highlight is the fishing spots on the Bouigane in the commune of Aucazein. The 2026 Ariège Fishing Guide lists accessible fishing spots there. Check the current conditions before your visit. Hiking the GR® 78 and fishing on the Bouigane are different ways to plan your stay: the route passes through the village and continues towards Buzan, while the fishing spots are on the river within the commune.

Markets and Regional Products

The Parc naturel régional des Pyrénées Ariégeoises market guide lists Aucazein as having a market on Thursday mornings. If you would like to plan your visit around market day, check the current schedule in advance.

The markets of the Pyrénées Ariégeoises offer an opportunity to discover local products and meet craftspeople and producers. This regional perspective adds another travel option to Aucazein’s village features: alongside the village structure and hiking route, you can also plan around market day.
