Ascou offers a clear contrast between winter activities at the Ascou resort and hiking destinations with varied landscapes. At the resort, you can go alpine skiing and snowboarding; there is also a snowshoe trail and snowkiting at Col de Pailhères. Hiking highlights include the summit views from Pic de Tarbésou and the beech and birch forest on the way to Dent d’Orlu. When planning, the first question is therefore whether you want to focus your stay on winter sports or the landscapes of the mountain trails.
Winter in Ascou: Ski Slopes, Snowshoeing and Snowkiting
The Ascou ski area has four green, five blue, seven red and two black runs. Red is the largest group, with seven runs, and black the smallest, with two; the green and blue categories fall in between, with four and five runs respectively. This distribution provides a clear overview of the run layout. You can go both alpine skiing and snowboarding in Ascou.
For snowshoeing, the resort offers a 4 km trail with free access. Snowkiting takes place at Col de Pailhères, which, at 2,000 m, is the highest point in the resort. Alongside the ski slopes, there are therefore two other forms of winter sport to choose from: a snowshoe trail and snowkiting at the pass.
In winter, the Ascou resort is accessible only from Ax-les-Thermes because Col de Pailhères is closed. Check seasonal road conditions before you travel. This access restriction should therefore be part of your planning from the outset for a winter visit.
Mountain Trails with Varied Landscapes
The hiking route to Pic de Tarbésou reaches the summit at 2,364 m. From there, the view extends west to Mont Valier and St Barthélémy, and east to Canigou. These two directions give the summit panorama clear points of reference and make the route appealing if you want named distant views to factor into your choice.
The trail to Dent d’Orlu leads through a beautiful beech and birch forest and reaches a marked spot at the summit at 2,222 m. Compared with Pic de Tarbésou, the difference lies in the focus: there, the views and directions are specified; here, the forest shapes the trail. This lets you choose between the two destinations based on whether you prefer the panorama or a walk among the trees.
The elevations can also be compared, as long as their respective references are kept in mind: 2,364 m is the summit elevation of Pic de Tarbésou; for Dent d’Orlu, 2,222 m refers to the marked spot at the summit. These different landscape highlights, as well as the range of winter activities, can help you decide whether Ascou is right for your stay.
A Practical Landmark
For hikers and visitors, the Aire d’accueil de Pailhères has parking spaces and picnic tables. These facilities provide two practical essentials for a visit: a place to park and tables for a picnic break.
