Artigat combines its location on the Lèze with the history of the hamlet of Bajou and a named circular walking route. This offers different points of interest when choosing where to stay: a valley with clearly described banks, a distinct village history and a specific route starting in Bajou. If you are looking for a hotel in Artigat, these themes can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.

The Lèze and its banks

Artigat lies on the left bank of the Lèze. At Artigat, the river runs through a straight valley across the Terrefort hills towards Toulouse. The lower-lying plain on the left bank is used mainly for growing cereals and fodder crops; the slopes on the right bank are used for livestock farming and forestry. The two banks therefore differ not only in location, but also in their terrain and land use. The Lèze is a tributary of the Ariège and rises in the limestone massif of the Plantaurel. The river description thus ranges from the use of its banks to the Lèze’s place in a wider river system.

Bajou: church and local history

Bajou is the largest hamlet in Artigat and was formerly an independent, fully fledged parish. The hamlet grew up around the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. These two details highlight different aspects: its status as a parish describes Bajou’s former ecclesiastical independence, while its development around the church locates the hamlet’s origins. Bajou can therefore be understood as a distinct place within Artigat, rather than simply as the name of the Tour de Bajou.

Tour de Bajou and practical information

The Tour de Bajou circular walking route starts and ends at Bajou church. Parking is available in front of the church at the starting point. Dogs are allowed on the route but must be kept on a leash so they do not startle the herds. If you are planning an outing with a dog, be sure to bring a leash and take care around the herds from the outset.

In Artigat, there is a free car park at the foot of the Church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption. Picnic tables stand opposite the church square, beside the D919. The free car park at Notre-Dame is a different reference point from the parking available in front of Bajou church at the start of the circular route. To find your way, check the church name: Notre-Dame de l’Assomption in Artigat or Bajou church at the start of the route.

Historical and culinary connections

Another historical connection dates back to 1560: in September, Arnaud du Tilh, who had taken the place of Martin Guerre, was hanged and burned in Artigat. This event adds a clearly dated historical connection to Artigat to Bajou’s ecclesiastical history. A Mounjetade meal was served at the Fête de Bajou. If you are planning to travel specifically for the festival, check the current programme in advance.
