Saint-Jean-D'ormont combines mill technology and church architecture with hiking routes that vary considerably in duration. Le Moulin dates from the 18th century; hikes range from around two hours to a twelve-hour tour. The village also has a distinctive bell tower and First World War memorial sites.

Mill Technology and the Village Landscape

Le Moulin is an 18th-century watermill at 12 Chemin du Moulin in Saint-Jean-D'ormont. It was rebuilt in 1863. A seven-metre horizontal-axis waterwheel is supplied with water from above. The construction date and later rebuilding can therefore be viewed as distinct periods in the mill’s history; the details about the axle and water supply also describe how it works.

The Église de Saint-Jean-d'Ormont also dates from the 18th century. Its distinctive onion-shaped bell tower belongs to the same period. The church stands on a promontory overlooking the village and valley; a civilian and military cemetery surrounds the building. The architecture, location, and cemetery offer different perspectives on the area: church architecture, landscape, and remembrance.

Hiking Trails of Varying Durations

The marked “Circuit pédestre – Les Gouttes” hiking trail is 6.5 kilometres long, is rated easy, and takes around two hours. It starts in front of Saint-Jean-D'ormont town hall and is freely accessible year-round. Its approximate duration gives you a manageable time frame for this route.

The “Circuit pédestre – La Hure” is considerably longer: it is 41 kilometres long, takes twelve hours, and is rated moderate. The trail starts in Saint-Jean-D'ormont, follows the Hure Valley, and passes through Denipaire, Châtas, Nayemont, Ban de Sapt, and Gémainfaing. The two hikes differ in both duration and rating: around two hours and easy for Les Gouttes, compared with twelve hours and moderate for La Hure.

La Hure also passes La Fontenelle, an important First World War site. A 2013 description locates the “Sentier de la mémoire” there, in the front-line sector, and mentions numerous relics and information panels about the fierce fighting of the First World War. Alongside the histories of the mill and church, this offers another historical perspective.

The route “l’échappée sauvage entre forêts mystiques et patrimoines cachés” is also listed for 2026. It passes through Saint-Jean-D'ormont, is 59.6 kilometres long, takes four days, and is rated difficult. The route is marked and freely accessible year-round; since route and access conditions may change, check the information before setting out.

A Cycling Route Along the Hure

Not every route described is a hiking trail: the “Boucle cyclosportive B7: L'Ormont” cycling loop continues to Hurbache after Saint-Jean-d'Ormont and follows the Hure along the way. This makes it possible to include a designated cycling route in your stay, while the hiking trails have their own duration and difficulty ratings.
