Saint-Amé combines the history of Saint-Mont and Vieux Saint-Amé with hiking trails to suit different time budgets. A viewpoint, historic churches and routes ranging from 45 minutes to several hours give you practical points of reference for planning your stay.

Saint-Mont: Views and protected landscape

The summit of Saint-Mont is 675 metres high and offers views over the Pays de Remiremont and the Vosges. The 77-hectare site has been protected and listed since 25 January 1944. This brings landscape and heritage together in Saint-Amé: Saint-Mont is not just a viewpoint, but also a protected site with a history of its own.

Churches, chapels and Vieux Saint-Amé

The Église de Saint-Amé was built between 1724 and 1726. Among its notable features is a wrought-iron communion rail dating from 1774, which has been listed as a historic monument since 1956. The church can be visited free of charge and independently, without a guide. Check the visiting arrangements in advance if you plan to visit.

Vieux Saint-Amé offers a different historical perspective: the site includes a chapel and the grotto where Saint Amé withdrew to pray and do penance. Vieux Saint-Amé is also associated with Saint-Amé’s first church; a cemetery was used there until 1724. This is distinct from the small chapel on the site of the former church of Le Saint-Mont. Built in 1852, it became a pilgrimage destination.

The Chapelle du Vieux Saint-Amé can be reached on foot from Saint-Étienne-lès-Remiremont via a hiking route. The route is available from the tourist office and in the Remiremont Plombières Tourisme app. This means you can make the chapel a hiking destination, rather than learning about the area’s history solely through its church buildings.

Choose hiking trails by time and difficulty

The Sentier des carrières is described as a difficult hike: it is 10 kilometres long, has 350 metres of elevation gain and takes about three hours. The trail can be accessed from the car park at the Saint-Amé stadium and is marked with a red ring. Its name points to a chapter in industrial history: the Carrières de Saint-Amé were established in 1850 to supply paving stones to Paris during the era of Haussmann’s boulevards.

For a much shorter route, there is the Sentier adapté pour tous. It is 0.8 kilometres long and takes about 30 minutes, with 20 metres of elevation gain. A fox on a blue background marks the trail, which includes a sandy section and a botanical nature trail. The Sentier accessible à tous offers bicycle parking, dry toilets, access suitable for people with reduced mobility, three picnic areas and two viewpoints. The two similarly named trails have different listed features; check the name of the trail when planning.

Le Poterlacat au fil de l'eau is an easy, 1.9-kilometre trail that takes about 45 minutes and has 18 metres of elevation gain. It also follows the Passion Truite Fario fishing route along the Cleurie. This route is particularly interesting to experienced anglers because of its high fishing quality. It offers access suitable for people with reduced mobility, adapted parking and fishing platforms suitable for everyone.

A short loop or a longer hike?

At 12.4 kilometres, with 464 metres of elevation gain and a duration of about 3 hours 50 minutes, the Sentier du patrimoine offers a longer outing. It follows the Sentier des moines towards Pont des Fées and Le Saint-Mont; it also leads towards the Chapelle du Vieux Saint-Amé. Comparing the walking times, there is a clear difference between the roughly 45 minutes on the Poterlacat trail, around three hours on the Sentier des carrières and just under four hours on the Sentier du patrimoine. This lets you choose a trail based on how much time you want to spend hiking, while keeping the different cultural and landscape themes in view.
