Place Jeanne d’Arc forms the historic center of Neufchâteau, and historic townhouses line the square. Together with the Hôtel de Houdreville and the churches, they create a cultural and historical focus that can be combined with outdoor trails. Neufchâteau is the first place in the Vosges department to be designated a “Site Patrimonial Remarquable.” When choosing your destination, you can weigh your options: would you like to focus on architectural history or include cycling and hiking trails? Both themes offer different ways to shape your stay.

Renaissance Buildings and Churches

The Hôtel de Houdreville is a Renaissance townhouse and houses Neufchâteau’s current town hall. Its Renaissance staircase was restored in 2014. Visitors can tour the medieval cellars; check with the local tourist office in advance about access. This building brings together its current function as the town hall, Renaissance architecture and the history of the cellars.

The churches also offer a range of historical points of interest. The Église Saint-Christophe was first mentioned in 1094; this date refers to its first mention, not necessarily the year it was built. The Église Saint-Nicolas is notable for combining two churches in one. Free tours are offered there in summer. As this is a seasonal offer, check the dates before your trip.

The Chapelle Wiriot offers another architectural detail: its vault dates from 1505 and has no vault cells. It is described as the only one among 300 chapels in France with this feature. Le Scala belongs to the complex of the former Couvent des Dames Augustines, adding a former monastic complex to the area’s historical points of interest.

Cycling and Hiking Trails with Distinctive Features

The EuroVélo 19 cycling route, “La Meuse à vélo,” passes through Neufchâteau. The Circuit de la Frézelle follows the Frézelle stream for part of its route; the Circuit de Neufeys is a 13 km hiking trail designated for Neufchâteau. The routes can be distinguished by their different features: EuroVélo 19 passes through the town, the Circuit de la Frézelle is characterized by its partial route along the stream, and the Circuit de Neufeys has a specific stated length. Check the Circuit de Neufeys trail conditions before setting out.

Another option is the family walking trail “Un détour dans la Plaine.” It starts in the Rouceux district and follows quiet paths along the Meuse. If you prefer a route by the river, you can distinguish it from the section along the Frézelle stream.

Playful Discoveries and Woodland

The “Livret jeu découverte” is designed for children aged 4 to 6, who can use it to explore the historic center. Dot-to-dot pictures, spot-the-difference puzzles and mazes lead to Neufchâteau’s main architectural landmarks. The booklet is sold at the tourist office reception as a set with a bag and small extras. Before your trip, check whether it is still available and what activities are currently included.

The Neufeys Forest offers a distinctive natural feature: it consists mainly of beech woodland and is home to a giant sequoia. Neufchâteau therefore offers cultural and historical themes alongside designated trails and woodland as different focal points to consider when choosing a trip.
