Tarquimpol offers a blend of architectural history and landscape: the Église Saint-Étienne combines a Romanesque round tower with a Gothic choir, while the Maison du Pays des Étangs highlights the village’s Gallo-Roman heritage and the birdlife at Étang de Lindre. There are also two circular trails of different lengths. When planning your trip, the church’s visiting arrangements are therefore just as relevant as the route length and the focus you would like to choose.

Church and château: different eras, clear visiting arrangements

The Église Saint-Étienne has a Romanesque round tower dating from the 12th century and a Gothic choir dating from the 14th century. The church brings together two distinct periods of architecture. If you are interested in historic architectural styles, you can compare specific features of the Romanesque and Gothic periods in these two parts of the building.

The church can only be visited from the outside. Self-guided visits are possible; guided tours are available on request. Check the visiting arrangements again before your trip so you can plan your visit accordingly.

The Domaine d’Alteville includes an 18th-century château. A guided tour of Tarquimpol continues at the Château d’Alteville. The period indicated for this visit is 1 February to 20 December 2026. If you are travelling later, check whether additional dates are available. This allows you to consider the two architectural highlights—the church and the château—along with their different visiting arrangements.

At Étang de Lindre: exhibition, birdlife and observatory

The Maison du Pays des Étangs is a museum exhibition space at Étang de Lindre. There, you can discover the hidden Gallo-Roman heritage of the village of Tarquimpol. You can also observe 248 bird species at the Maison. This brings together two different interests in one place: learning about the village’s history and observing its birdlife.

The Observatoire de Tarquimpol is located behind the Maison du Pays des Étangs, at Étang de Lindre. Admission is charged. Include this stop as a separate admission cost in your plans; entry is not free.

Comparing two circular trails

The Randonnée de Lindre-Basse à Tarquimpol – sentier des paysages is a 9-kilometre out-and-back walking route to the peninsula. It is listed as a walking route for 2026–2027 and offers views of Étang de Lindre. The Sentier de Lindre à Tarquimpol is an 8-kilometre out-and-back route. The routes differ in length by one kilometre; the longer route’s description specifically mentions the peninsula and views of Étang.

To choose between them, you can weigh two specific factors: the stated distance and the named destination. If you prefer the shorter distance, the 8-kilometre Sentier is the relevant option to consider. If you are looking for a route to the peninsula with views of Étang de Lindre, these features are mentioned for the 9-kilometre Randonnée. The distance alone does not indicate how long the walk will take you personally; plan the route at your own pace.

Whether your main interest is architecture, Gallo-Roman heritage, birdwatching or hiking, Tarquimpol offers different ways to explore. Base your accommodation search on the themes that matter most to you during your stay, and check the specific dates for visits that are available only during a set period.
