Saint-Louis combines industrial heritage with distinctive rocky and forested landscapes. The Saint-Louis–Arzviller Inclined Plane began operating in 1969, replacing 17 traditional locks in the nearby Vallée des Éclusiers. When planning a trip, several different interests come together: the history of the installation, trails through the valley and activities with varying time requirements.
Industrial history at the Inclined Plane
A visit to the Inclined Plane includes a visit to the permanent exhibition, access to the upper platform to watch the manoeuvres, a tour of the museum boat “Sophie-Marie” and the engine room. The visitor experience therefore includes the installation and its manoeuvres, as well as the museum boat and its technology. Availability may vary by season; check before your trip.
Rocks, lock staircase and valley trails
The Circuit des Éclusiers runs from the former lock staircase past distinctive pink sandstone rocks and through shady forests to the Inclined Plane. The lock staircase has historical connections to lock keepers and boatmen. The route thus brings together several specific features: lock history, striking rock formations and forest stretches.
In the forest near the Inclined Plane, in the municipality of Saint-Louis, lies the Rocher du Calice, a rock formation whose distinctive shape was formed by erosion. It offers a different perspective on the landscape from the pink sandstone rocks along the Circuit des Éclusiers. Those interested in natural landforms can note the difference between a single rock formation and a route through several landscape features.
From the Inclined Plane, the Vallée des Éclusiers can be explored by bicycle, on foot or by tourist train. These options differ mainly in how you get around. So when choosing, first consider whether you would prefer to explore the valley by bike, on foot or by train.
The Véloroute V52 offers a different route perspective: it follows the banks of the Marne-Rhine Canal to Arzviller. The Saint-Louis–Arzviller Inclined Plane is highlighted as a key feature of the route. This means there are two distinct points of reference: a specifically named route along the canal and the trails in the Vallée des Éclusiers.
Activities with different time requirements
The alpine coaster luge runs along a 500-metre track through trees beside the Zorn Valley and reaches up to 6 metres above the ground. Children aged 8 and over may ride with an adult. Operating conditions may vary by season; check the conditions for your travel dates before planning your ride.
At the foot of the Inclined Plane, the Mini-port de la luge du Plan Incliné offers electric boat rides lasting 15 or 30 minutes. The two ride durations give you a specific choice based on the time available. As schedules may vary seasonally, check them before your trip.
Whether you are more interested in technical history, a route through forest and valley, or a ride with a set duration, Saint-Louis offers a range of themes to explore. The visits and rides mentioned also differ in whether seasonal availability or a seasonally variable schedule should be taken into account.
