Montenach can be explored from two perspectives: its natural environment and church history. The nature reserve provides the first focus, with slopes across six hills, orchid grasslands, and the Circuit des collines. The parish church of Saint-Cyriaque and the Chapelle Saint-Antoine de Padoue offer historical points of reference. You can therefore plan your time according to whether you want to focus on landscapes and biodiversity or on architectural history and church furnishings.

Nature Reserve and Ways to Visit

The Montenach nature reserve extends across the slopes of six different hills. Its sunny slopes lie at elevations between 225 and 325 metres. The Circuit des collines passes through hills classified as a national nature reserve and through orchid grasslands where more than 500 plant and animal species occur. The landscape, protected status, and biodiversity each provide a specific point of reference for exploring nature.

The Réserve Naturelle Nationale de Montenach can be visited independently, in compliance with the applicable regulations. Guided tours for groups or families are offered on the reserve’s discovery trail. For planning purposes, you can distinguish between independent visits, which are subject to the applicable regulations, and guided tours offered on the discovery trail for groups or families.

The Circuit des collines starts at the Maison de la Nature du Pays de Sierck. Trail conditions and signage may change with the seasons; check the latest notices before setting out. The picnic area at the Maison de la Nature is also a practical planning point: outside opening hours, it is accessible to everyone around the clock, seven days a week. If you are planning an overnight stay or group use, check the conditions on site.

Churches and Historical Dates

The parish church of Saint-Cyriaque in Montenach replaced a chapel built in 1208 and consecrated in 1235. The current parish church was built between 1884 and 1886. Its foundation stone was blessed on 23 September 1884, and it was consecrated on 14 September 1886. This makes it possible to distinguish the medieval predecessor chapel from the construction of the present church as two separate historical phases.

The parish church houses a processional statuette of Saint Cyriacus, made of carved, polychrome-painted wood. Polychrome means multicoloured; together with the carving, the term describes the object’s material and design. This adds a specific item of church furnishing to the building’s history.

The Chapelle Saint-Antoine de Padoue is located in the village of Kaltviller in Montenach. It was built in 1901 on the initiative of the parish priest, Isidore Schneider. Chronologically, the much older predecessor building of the parish church, the present church from the late 19th century, and the chapel from 1901 represent distinct periods.

For nature visits, the way you visit and seasonal trail conditions are important planning considerations. For the churches, location, construction dates, and furnishings help distinguish their historical references.
