In Maizières-Les-Vic, architectural history and landscape offer contrasting aspects of a stay: evidence from the 18th and 19th centuries is followed by ponds of recognised ecological importance, as well as a section of the Véloroute V52. When looking for accommodation, you can plan your trip around whether culture, nature or an activity on the route is your main focus.

Churches and historic buildings

The Church of Saint-Michel tells the story of several building phases. Its reconstruction began in 1736; the nave and choir were completed as early as 1737. The bell tower was built from 1739, and its spire was completed in 1756. The municipality specifically requested the use of the neo-Gothic style for the church.

The former synagogue is the last testament to a long-standing Jewish presence in the canton of Vic-sur-Seille. It was designed by the architect Ferdinand Boudot and built between 1868 and 1872; it was inaugurated in 1872. It was granted heritage protection in two stages: the Holy Ark was protected on 18 May 2009, and the synagogue as a whole on 28 March 2012. The construction period, inauguration and protection status thus represent different milestones in its history.

The residential building of the former Château de Maizières-lès-Vic also has a distinctive architectural detail: the square building is roofed with beaver-tail tiles. These tiles have become rare in the canton. The house appears to date from the early 18th century.

The current buildings on the Hellocourt estate date from 1890 to 1894. They are thought to be an early work by the Karlsruhe architect Hermann Billing. Industrially produced cast iron and brick, decorative design and functional planning make the estate an exceptional ensemble. Together with the older buildings, it offers a glimpse into different architectural periods; they do not all belong to a single building phase.

Ponds and natural heritage

Maizières-lès-Vic is part of the Parc naturel régional de Lorraine. The municipality has four type 1 ZNIEFF areas and one type 2 area. The Étang de Brihoff is a ten-hectare type 1 ZNIEFF area. These details provide a concrete picture of the landscape: nature here is not limited to individual shorelines, but also includes designated areas of different types.

The ponds of Laixière and Brihoff are associated with marsh harriers, purple herons, numerous amphibians and bats, remarkable flora, and populations of the mollusc Vertigo de Moulin. This species is listed in Annex II of the Habitats Directive. Species presence may vary seasonally. The Étang de Laixière is also designated as a biodiversity reservoir to be preserved. For planning your trip, this offers two distinct perspectives: the particular natural value of individual ponds and the broader context of the municipality’s natural areas.

Cycle route and waterways

The Véloroute V52 – Voie verte du Pays du Saulnois runs for ten kilometres between Lagarde and Port Sainte-Marie in Maizières-lès-Vic. The section is suitable for running, walking, cycling and rollerblading. Check the path surface and facilities before setting out.

Beyond this locally defined section, the Véloroute V52 continues into Meurthe-et-Moselle and includes sections of the V52 Paris–Strasbourg and the Paneuropean Paris–Prague cycle route. This lets you distinguish between a locally described route and the wider cycle network, without treating them as if they required the same planning.

The Canal de la Marne au Rhin also has specific points of interest here. Port Sainte-Marie is a stopping point where recreational boaters can moor. Lock No. 10 is also located near Port-Sainte-Marie, within the territory of Maizières-lès-Vic. If you are including the canal in your plans, check the current conditions at the stopping point in advance.
