Destry brings together historical local connections, a nativity scene, horse-riding activities and community events. These different highlights can help you decide where to travel: you can learn about the town through its history, take an interest in the nativity scene or focus on the offerings of the Ecurie de Destry. There are also play activities for children and walking opportunities. This gives you more than one reason to choose Destry as a place to stay.
History Between Seigneurial Rule and Church Construction
A 19th-century topographical dictionary records Destry as a royal villa under the Carolingians. For the 10th century, it identifies the town as the seat of the County of Destrich or Destroch. Destry’s Notre-Dame Church dates from 1742. During reconstruction of the church choir in Destry, tombs of princes and warriors were discovered in 1722. These references connect an early political classification with specific later features of the church.
Nativity Scene: Figures and Display
For the 2020 edition, children from the village and their families set up the nativity scene. The display described at the time included around twenty figures in their original design; all the figures had recently been restored at that point. They are 20th-century santons, with an average height of 50 to 60 centimetres. If you plan to travel to Destry specifically to see the nativity scene, check in advance whether and when it is currently on display and what access arrangements apply.
Horse-Riding Activities at the Ecurie de Destry
The Ecurie de Destry offers a pony club, dressage and show jumping. It also runs various and unusual courses designed to improve the relationship between rider and horse. These riding activities are complemented by courses with an explicitly stated purpose of fostering the relationship between people and animals. If these offerings are a reason for your trip, confirm availability in advance; activity details may change. Horse boarding is also available, with the possibility of access to the facilities. Before travelling, check whether horse boarding is available and whether this possible access will be available during your visit.
Community, Play and Walks
The Les Enfants de Destry association organizes community events, including the St. Nicholas festival and a children’s carnival. If you plan to travel specifically for one of these events, check the exact date before making arrangements. Destry also has play activities for children and opportunities for walks. These local offerings provide a different focus from the history of the church and the town, spanning topics from history and horse riding to play and walks.
