Berling can be explored during a stay through three specific themes: hiking routes, garden and rest areas, and the history of the Eselbahn. For planning, the route length and the purpose of your trip are especially important.
Hiking and the Marche de l’Amitié
The Marche de l’Amitié is a traditional event in Berling and takes place on Whit Monday. The 2025 edition featured two hiking routes: one just under 5 kilometres long and one 11 kilometres long. The different lengths make it easier to choose according to distance: the route just under 5 kilometres is the shorter option, while the 11-kilometre route covers correspondingly more ground. If you want the event to determine your travel dates, check the date for the relevant year.
The hiking routes for the 2025 Whit Monday edition ran mostly through the forest. As the exact route may change in future editions, check the route details for your chosen date.
Gardens and breaks along the way
A completed hiking trail leads to a rest area and a botanical fruit garden for hikers. This gives the route a clear destination, and you can plan to take a break at the rest area.
An existing path was extended to create a meeting area and a botanical, vegetable and educational garden. The meeting area also serves as a rest area and has picnic tables. This identifies both the opportunity to rest and the different garden themes.
In March 2023, the botanical fruit garden received its first donated fruit trees from fruit growers in the area around Phalsbourg. For the trails and rest areas, it is a good idea to check the conditions on site before your trip.
Local history and getting your bearings
The Eselbahn is a specific link to Berling’s local history; its historical period spans the years 1883 to 1953. Sections of the former Eselbahn were used on the hiking routes of the 2025 Marche de l’Amitié. This lets you combine your choice of route with a piece of local history, rather than considering hiking solely in terms of distance.
The Protestant church is located on Rue de la Scierie in Berling. There is parking at the church, access for people with reduced mobility and wheelchair-accessible toilets. If any of these features are important for your plans, check the access information again before your visit.
Cycle path and circuit in the surrounding area
The cycle path described in 2023 runs along the former railway line from Berling station to Graufthal station. Check current trail conditions before setting off.
In the surrounding area, in neighbouring Vilsberg, the official Circuit de l’Eselbahn partly follows the former metre-gauge railway line between Lutzelbourg and Drulingen. The details offer different points of reference: the cycle path focuses on Berling and Graufthal stations as its endpoints, while the circuit’s historical connection is the former metre-gauge railway line.
