Thillombois can be explored through three distinct reasons to visit: the château and its park, the annual Thillombois/Benoîte-Vaux hike, and the Biennale Équestre. The historical features of the château and park provide a consistent thematic framework; the hiking route and event programme, on the other hand, relate to a specific edition. When planning your trip, it is therefore important to first decide whether you are interested in the historic site, a hike or an equestrian event programme.
Château and Park
The Château de Thillombois was built at the end of the Middle Ages. The château park was listed as a Monument historique by decree of 6 March 1995. These two dates relate to different things: the construction period refers to the château, while the later heritage designation applies to the park. The building and park can therefore be considered as two distinct historical points of reference.
The park is laid out as an irregular garden with uneven terrain. The garden design and terrain are two distinct features: one concerns the layout, the other the nature of the ground. In addition to its heritage designation, the park’s specific design is also part of its character. If you are considering visiting the park, take the uneven terrain into account when planning.
Guided tours of the château are offered to groups of 20 or more by prior reservation. If you would like to include a guided tour in your trip, confirm the group size and make a reservation in advance; both are requirements for this visit option. The château’s historical significance and the conditions for a guided tour are therefore two separate planning considerations.
Thillombois/Benoîte-Vaux Hike
The annual Thillombois/Benoîte-Vaux hike is organised by the association “Connaissance de la Meuse”. For one edition, a marked 10 km circular route along the Chemin des Pèlerins is offered as an option. The circular route, markings and distance make this route option specific: the 10 km gives an indication of its length, while the route format establishes that it is a circular walk.
The route is specific to each edition; dates and arrangements may also change. So check the details for the relevant edition before planning your trip around it. If the hike is your main reason for visiting, plan first around its date and the route option offered for that edition.
Biennale Équestre
The Biennale Équestre is a three-day equestrian event held in the park of the Château de Thillombois. The programme for the 2026 edition includes, among other things, liberty vaulting, carriage driving and haute école dressage. These disciplines give the programme different focal points. Dates and programme may change from one edition to another; if one of the disciplines is important to your travel decision, refer to the programme for the relevant edition.
Different Planning Considerations
The hike and the Biennale answer different questions about timing. The 10 km refers to the length of a particular circular route option; the three days describe the duration of the equestrian event. These are not comparable details: for the hike, the route choice is a point of reference, while for the Biennale, the dates and programme of the relevant edition are what matter. Once you have chosen your reason for visiting and the relevant dates, you can also tailor your hotel search for your stay accordingly.
