Revigny-Sur-Ornain can be explored through two questions: Which architectural and historical traces would you like to look at more closely, and what kind of route suits your plans? Local architecture ranges from Flamboyant Gothic to Renaissance style. Routes follow a former railway line or pass through two valleys, with a canal along the return route. This is how the town combines cultural history with practical opportunities to get outdoors.

Architecture and traces of local history

The Eglise St-Pierre - St-Paul dates from the 15th to 16th centuries and was built in the Flamboyant Gothic style. It is listed as a historic monument. The Renaissance-style HĂ´tel de Ville is one of the sights you can discover on the tourist walk through Revigny-Sur-Ornain. Comparing the two buildings reveals different styles: Flamboyant Gothic at the church and Renaissance at the town hall.

The Cadran solaire sundial also preserves a specific piece of local history: it incorporates the gable of the former Maginot school. The school was built in 1841 and demolished in 1975. The story of the statue of André Maginot took a different course: it was destroyed in 1942 and faithfully recreated in 1950. A surviving architectural feature from a demolished building and a faithful recreation of a statue thus stand side by side as two different ways of preserving the past.

Another historical timeline is linked to the Chapelle Notre Dame de Grâce. A hermitage built in 1630 once stood nearby; it was destroyed at the end of the 19th century, while the present-day chapel dates from 1898. The former hermitage was near the current chapel. The chapel site is privately owned.

Routes with different characteristics

The Rando du Tacot is a walking route along a former railway line between Haironville and Revigny-Sur-Ornain. You can travel it on foot, by bicycle, on horseback or with a horse-drawn carriage. This gives you a choice of different ways to travel the same route. Before setting out, check the current route and signage, as route conditions and markings can change.

The Circuit cyclotouristique Revigny-sur-Ornain offers a different route: it leads from the Ornain Valley to the Saulx Valley and follows the Marne-Rhine Canal on the way back. This makes for a clear comparison when choosing a route: the Rando du Tacot follows a former railway line between two towns, while the Circuit connects two valleys and follows the canal on the return journey. The Ornain runs through Revigny-Sur-Ornain as part of its 120-kilometre course through the south of the Meuse département. The river is therefore connected both with the town itself and with the valley included in the cycling route.
