Moirey-Flabas-Crépion can be understood through specific historical themes: the Bois des Caures, the Église Saint-Maur in Flabas, and a former First World War camp. The commune also belongs to the Natura 2000 site Corridor de la Meuse. When planning a stay, it is worth distinguishing between historical sites with established dates and a guided tour offered only during a particular season.

The Bois des Caures and its field fortification

The Bois des Caures lies between the villages of Flabas and Ville-devant-Chaumont and is considered the site of the first engagement in the Battle of Verdun. It is home to the Poste de commandement du colonel Driant, a field fortification built of concrete in 1915. A decree dated 5 June 1931 classified it as a historic monument; since 20 July of the same year, it has been protected in its entirety as a historic monument. This allows two different scales to be distinguished: the field fortification is a specific structure with its own heritage-protection history, while the forest is considered the site of a significant engagement.

The church’s construction history in Flabas

The Église Saint-Maur de Flabas represents a different sequence of events. It was built in the 16th century, almost completely destroyed by bombing during the First World War, and rebuilt in 1931 on the foundations of the earlier church. Here, 1931 refers to the reconstruction, not the construction of the original church. Rebuilding on the earlier foundations makes the connection between the new building and the older church concrete.

The reprisal camp and its memory

The reprisal camp at Flabas was established close to the front between 15 January and 30 April 1917. There, 500 French prisoners, including six officers, were assembled. The former site is marked by three cypress trees and a bilingual information board in French and German. Check the condition of this marker before travelling. While the church’s history spans several construction phases, the camp is associated with a distinct event in 1917 and a specifically identified group of prisoners.

Landscape and travel planning

Moirey-Flabas-Crépion is one of the communes within the Natura 2000 site Corridor de la Meuse. A guided battlefield tour by car, focusing on the Bois des Caures, is offered from February to November. If you would like to include the tour, check the specific dates for your travel period in advance. When looking for a holiday rental, you can plan your stay around your itinerary and arrange a possible tour separately.

The different historical periods are also easy to distinguish: the church dates back to the 16th century; the field fortification, camp, and reconstruction belong to the years 1915, 1917, and 1931. This sequence connects different chapters of local history without reducing them to a single historical site. Travel planning can therefore combine permanent architectural and historical features with a seasonal offering, the specific dates of which should be checked in advance.
