Saint-Martin Church in Étain preserves architectural elements from several centuries; the Musée des Jouets Petitcollin, the town hall and natural destinations such as Bois de Tilly add to the options. For planning, it helps to distinguish clearly between them: Saint-Martin and the town hall represent architectural history, the museum is dedicated to toy making, while the Orne and Bois de Tilly offer different information about nature and routes. This can help you decide whether cultural heritage, a family-oriented museum activity or time outdoors should shape your stay.

Saint-Martin: Several Building Phases and La Piéta

Saint-Martin Church preserves architectural elements from the 12th century, five bays of the nave from the 13th century, and additions from the 14th century. This sequence makes the building’s development over several centuries a special subject of cultural history. The choir adds a precisely dated chapter to its history: its reconstruction began in 1437 and was financed by Guillaume Huin, who was from Étain and later became a cardinal.

A work of art in its own right within the church is La Piéta in the Chapelle du Sacré Cœur. The life-size depiction shows the Virgin Mary holding the lifeless body of Jesus Christ on her knees. La Piéta has been classified as a historic monument since 1905. The building’s history and the artwork thus offer two distinct ways to explore Saint-Martin: the development of the building on the one hand, and the specific religious depiction on the other.

Town Hall and Museum

Joseph Hornecker was commissioned to oversee the reconstruction of the town hall, which was carried out from 1922 to 1926. The original layout of the main façade was preserved. Visitor access is clearly limited: during town hall opening hours, only the entrance hall is accessible; the reception room is not open to visitors. Check the town hall’s current opening hours before planning your visit.

At the Musée des Jouets Petitcollin, the history of toy making is presented through a sound-and-light show led by the mascots Viny and Cellulo. Another activity is designed for families: they can use a tablet to create their own virtual doll. The museum thus combines the history of toy making with a creative activity. As opening arrangements and the availability of the activity should be checked before visiting, it is advisable to make a quick enquiry before setting off.

The Orne and Bois de Tilly: Nature and Route Options

The renaturalized Orne in Étain is designated an Espace Naturel Sensible (ENS), or Sensitive Natural Area. The designation reflects its landscape value and biological diversity. Bois de Tilly offers a different aspect of nature: its tree species include sessile oak, pedunculate oak, birch, wild cherry, wild pear, wild service tree, aspen and hornbeam. Shrubs include European spindle, cornelian cherry and hawthorn. Frogs, toads, salamanders, alpine newts and smooth newts, as well as deer and squirrels, are also among the local species.

Four routes in Bois de Tilly differ in type and length: a mountain-bike route of 8.3 km, a walking route of 7.9 km, a 3.5 km trail and a 1.4 km botanical trail. The mountain-bike and walking routes are similar in length; the trail, and especially the botanical trail, are shorter. This makes it easier to compare route lengths without treating the different options as equivalent. There is also the 17.3 km circular route “Du bois de Tilly au fil de l'Orne”. It starts at the Halle d'Étain, 2 rue des Casernes. When choosing, you can therefore distinguish between the routes in Bois de Tilly and this circular route, whose starting point is explicitly specified.
