Chaumont-sur-Aire is located at kilometre point 26.4 of the Voie Sacrée, which runs through the village. This gives the village a clear connection to a route associated both with the history of the Battle of Verdun and with a range of travel options. Two specific examples of the built heritage add to this connection with the route: the Église Saint-Pierre and the municipal washhouse. SKLC 55 adds a karting option, with sessions of different durations. Visitors can choose between local history, the wider route and a karting session as distinct areas of focus when planning their trip.

The Voie Sacrée: History and Travel Options

During the Battle of Verdun, the Voie Sacrée was the main supply route for the French troops. In the Meuse department, it leads through landscapes and First World War memorial sites, including Argonne, the Saint-Mihiel Salient, Les Éparges and Verdun. Chaumont-sur-Aire is located at kilometre point 26.4 of the route. The Voie Sacrée tourist route can be travelled by car, motorcycle, motorhome, coach or bicycle; the Voie Sacrée also includes walking and cycling tours. These are different ways to travel: in addition to driving along the tourist route, visitors can also choose to explore on foot or by bicycle. The landscapes and memorial sites mentioned also place the route in the wider context of the department.

Église Saint-Pierre and the Municipal Washhouse

The Église Saint-Pierre is a landmark on the Voie Sacrée and part of Chaumont-sur-Aire’s local heritage. The current church building was constructed in 1847, replacing an earlier church that had fallen into disrepair by 1838. The two dates therefore mark different stages in the building’s history: the condition of the previous building and the construction of the current church. The municipal washhouse also dates from the 19th century, but offers a different point of interest. Its distinctive roof frame supports a zinc roof; a fountain with a semicircular basin is attached to the washhouse. Chaumont-sur-Aire thus offers both the history of a replacement building and specific architectural details of a roof and fountain.

Karting and a Visitor Attraction Outside the Village

SKLC 55 is located at La Haie la Gougne, 55260 Chaumont-sur-Aire. The venue offers individual 15- or 30-minute karting sessions, as well as 15-minute BIKART sessions. The formats can be compared directly when planning your time: individual karting sessions are available in 15- and 30-minute options, while BIKART sessions are listed as 15 minutes.

Outside the village, Auberge du Moulin Haut is housed in a former 18th-century water mill. Its enclosed grounds cover three hectares and are surrounded by centuries-old trees. A visit featuring collections of butterflies and other insects may be offered on the grounds as part of various packages: a collection of butterflies and other insects can be visited there as part of various packages. This offering is subject to the relevant packages and adds a separate visitor attraction outside the village to the local history.

Getting There on the Fluo Line
