Saxon-Sion offers travelers interested in history and landscapes different perspectives on the Colline de Sion-Vaudémont. Its settlement dates back to the Middle Neolithic; there is also a permanent visitor trail, themed trails and a seasonal program. Those planning a stay can choose between archaeological, geological and natural history highlights.

Settlement, Place of Worship and Visitor Trail

The Site archéologique de la Colline de Sion had been settled since the Middle Neolithic. A period of intensive use occurred in the Late Bronze Age. The site was also settled from the Iron Age through the Early Middle Ages; in the Early Middle Ages, it became a place of worship. Notre-Dame de Sion was revered on the Colline as a pilgrimage site. Together, these points in time provide an overview of different chapters of history without treating them as a single period.

The Cité des Paysages complements this historical perspective with a permanent visitor trail covering nearly 600 m², which is accessible to everyone. It leads from the geological formation of the Colline de Sion-Vaudémont through the first traces of human settlement to later changes in the landscape. In this way, natural history and human use are presented side by side along a single route. If you are interested in both, this themed trail offers an overview before you explore specific historical or landscape features.

Ridges, Views and Nature

The Colline de Sion-Vaudémont is a geological hill in the Côtes de Moselle. At 540 meters, it is the highest point in the Côtes de Moselle landform. From there, the views described extend across the landscapes of the Saintois as far as the Vosges ridges. The elevation and the view describe two different aspects of the place: its position in the landform and the broad views of the surrounding landscapes.

Nature also has a clearly defined focal point: the southern part of the Colline includes a calcareous grassland with numerous protected animals and plants. This adds a habitat with protected wildlife and plant life to the geological perspective. If you want to explore landscapes and nature together, you will find not only views but also a specific natural feature in a clearly defined area.

Three Trails with Different Highlights

The trails each have a different focus. The Sentier des Crêtes follows the hill ridges and offers panoramic views across the region. Geology takes center stage on the approximately 8 km Circuit des Pierres de Sion, a circular route that leads to the Stars of Sion and other distinctive geological formations. The Sentier des Légendes, in turn, has a themed route; information panels explore the many legends associated with the hill.

These descriptions can help you choose based on your interests: panoramas, geological formations or legends. Only the Circuit des Pierres de Sion is given an approximate length; the trails therefore differ mainly in their stated focus and format. No shared route sequence is specified. You can choose the theme that appeals to you most rather than treating the three trails as equivalent offerings.

Seasonal Program and Travel Planning

The Cité des Paysages offers workshops, exhibitions, nighttime walks and nature outings. A program is created each year for a season running from April to November. Since the program is seasonal, it is worth checking the dates for your intended travel period before your trip. This will help you coordinate an activity with your interests and travel dates.

This choice gives your search a specific focus without treating the different themes as interchangeable. If you are planning a visit as part of the program, check the dates for your travel period.
