Saint Roch Cross, the calcareous grasslands of the Sainte-Barbe Plateau and the heritage orchard offer a range of topics in Maizières: history, observing plants and preserving old fruit varieties. Other features include the municipal Pommery Park, the church with its bell tower and a viewpoint on the western side. When planning your visit, consider the respective access points and conditions: the park is open to the public during the day, a staircase leads to the church forecourt, and access conditions at the viewpoint may change.

Saint Roch Cross on Chemin des Vignes

Saint Roch Cross is dedicated to Saint Roch, dates from the time of the great plague epidemic of 1587, and is considered the oldest monument in the commune of Maizières. Its dedication identifies its religious significance, while the date places it in its historical context. The cross stands above the slopes of Maizières, at the upper end of Chemin des Vignes. As you climb, you can see remnants of former dry-stone vineyard walls; they add traces of the area’s former vineyards to the monument’s history. Some wall remnants may be weathered, and trail conditions may change. So check the current conditions before setting out.

Church Forecourt and Pommery Park

The church and bell tower of Maizières stand on a raised rectangular outcrop. The church forecourt can be reached from the road via a staircase; take this access into account if you plan to visit the square. The municipal Pommery Park offers a different focus for a visit: it is open to the public during the day and can be accessed via Rue Gambetta. Plan a park visit during the day and check the current opening conditions in advance.

The Heritage Orchard

The heritage orchard in Maizières is an educational natural space open to everyone. It is dedicated to preserving old fruit varieties. While the Sainte-Barbe Plateau is known for wild orchids and aromatic plants, the orchard is specifically devoted to preserving fruit varieties. Fruit-picking is governed by the municipal regulation adopted in June 2025: fruit may be picked solely for personal consumption. Open access and the picking rule concern different things: the garden is open to everyone, while picking is limited to personal consumption.

The Limestone Plateau and Its Plant Life

Maizières lies at the foot of the southern side of the Sainte-Barbe Limestone Plateau. Walkers can discover wild orchids and aromatic plants on the plateau’s calcareous grasslands. Some plant species are protected and must not be picked. This distinction is important when observing nature: you can discover the plants, but protected species should be left undisturbed. In this way, the plateau combines botanical discoveries with a clear rule for protecting plant life.

Viewpoint on the Western Side

There is a viewpoint on the western side of Maizières, accessible by a road suitable for vehicles. The road runs south of the quarry fence towards the motocross site. This route provides specific directions for getting there. As access conditions and quarry operations may change, check the current conditions before setting out.
