In Dommartin-sous-Amance, architecture, local history and nature shape different aspects of a trip. The Église Saint-Martin offers a glimpse of late Gothic architecture, while the Maison Forte opens up another historical theme through its construction history, preserved interior furnishings and themed exhibitions. The Voie verte de l’Amezule and the Le Pain de Sucre area add to the picture. If you are looking for accommodation, these interests can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.

Église Saint-Martin: late Gothic details and history

The Église Saint-Martin dates from the 15th and 16th centuries and features elements of late Flamboyant Gothic architecture. Its architectural details include an oculus in this Gothic style. The choir and the former seigneurial chapel survived the partial destruction during the Thirty Years’ War; the chapel now serves as a sacristy. The church’s history therefore encompasses both its construction and a specific historical turning point.

A feature dating from later introduces a different time period: the church houses a statue of the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child dating from 1760. It has been listed as a Monument historique since 1979. Compared with the date of the church’s construction, the statue represents a later period.

Maison Forte: architectural features and interior furnishings

The Maison Forte was built for the local lord at the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century. The trefoil-shaped window openings on the ground floor and the loopholes in the attic date from this period. Visitors interested in historic architecture can observe different architectural features in the various parts of the building.

The preserved 18th-century interior furnishings include three fireplaces, carved panelling, interior oak shutters and an alcove. The furnishings thus include fireplaces and woodwork, as well as a niche incorporated into the room’s design.

On the Maison Forte grounds next to the town hall, dedicated rooms explore the history of global conflicts. They also focus on the conflicts’ effects on the municipality and the region. Themed exhibitions featuring collections and reconstructions are regularly offered under the direction of François Hartz. Visits to the Maison Forte are available on request; check the arrangements before your trip.

Voie verte de l’Amezule: a paved route

The Voie verte de l’Amezule passes through Dommartin-sous-Amance. Its smooth, paved surface is suitable for roller skating. A description published in July 2024 also mentions walking and cycling. For planning purposes, both the specifically described surface and the different ways of using the route are relevant.

Le Pain de Sucre: habitats and species

The Le Pain de Sucre area is a ZNIEFF continentale de type 1 and lies within the municipalities of Agincourt and Dommartin-sous-Amance. It covers 15.68 hectares and ranges in elevation from 315 to 350 metres. Its location in two municipalities is part of its geographical context, along with its stated area and elevation.

The habitats described there include semi-dry Central European grasslands with Bromus erectus, hedgerows and small areas of anthropogenic deciduous woodland. The area is associated with 14 notable species, including Laser trilobé (Laser trilobum) and the sand lizard (Lacerta agilis). Records come from different survey years. Thus, alongside the habitat types, documented species are a key part of the natural features of Le Pain de Sucre.
