Springs, trails and seasons
The Circuit de l'Eau Salée trail provides a specific starting point for exploring the spring landscape in Crézilles: it begins in the village square opposite the town hall and leads to the Deuille de Crézilles. After 600 metres, the trail crosses a meadow; a path branches off to the left, leading another 100 metres to the spring. The sequence of village square, meadow, turnoff and spring provides clear directions along the route. Check local access conditions before setting out; trail conditions may vary seasonally.
The Deuille de Crézilles is the most abundant of the Deuilles and a resurgence spring of the Aroffe; its outflow feeds the Bouvade. The spring’s activity varies with hydrological conditions, and its flow with rainfall and the season. The Sentiers des Deuilles trail network also leads to four local karst springs that overflow during floods; the Deuille is one of them.
The Sentiers des Deuilles also includes Crézilles and offers 21 marked routes covering a total of 290 kilometres. This is a different level of planning from the Circuit de l'Eau Salée: the latter starts at a specific location and gives directions to the Deuille, while the 21 routes make up the larger trail network. If you are looking for a single named route, you can follow the Circuit; if you are considering different marked trails, read the network figure as its total extent.
Along the Circuit de l'Eau Salée, the seasonal plant highlights appear at different times: snowflakes can be admired from late February to early March; wild garlic is mentioned as available for picking in April. Blooming and growing periods vary with the weather. This staggered timing can help you choose when to visit: the plant highlights fall in different travel periods, even though the weather affects their development.
Art and local history
Crézilles’ cultural history includes the artworks in the Church of Saint-Gengoult. The painting “Saint Vincent-de-Paul assistant Louis XIII sur son lit de mort” is located there. A paten from the church was made in the first quarter of the 19th century by the silversmith Louis Butte, who came from Nancy. It consists of a single piece of silver and was cast, shaped, silver-plated and gilded. If you would like to see the artworks in person, check the church’s visiting arrangements in advance.
A report from November 2022 noted that volunteers had renovated the washhouse in Crézilles as part of a community effort. The two cultural themes offer different perspectives: sacred art and silversmithing in the church, and community work at the washhouse.
The wider landscape
In the wider region around Crézilles lies the Côtes de Toul landscape area, characterised by vineyards and villages on hillsides. It complements the local themes of springs, trails and culture with a broader landscape perspective.
