A white limestone washhouse in the heart of the village and the neo-Romanesque rebuilt Church of Saint George give Bernécourt two distinct features. Also worth noting are a chalice inscribed “CHARITAS,” the rural offerings of Domaine de Saturnin, and destinations in Mamey, 7 km from Bernécourt. This gives you two ways to plan your trip: focus on Bernécourt itself and its architectural and local history, or explore themes related to forest trails, a former monastery, and a sinkhole.

Architectural history in the village

The Church of Saint George was rebuilt in the neo-Romanesque style. The washhouse, or lavoir, is in the heart of Bernécourt and is made of white limestone. It was badly damaged in September 1914 and faithfully restored during reconstruction. It was renovated in 2009, when the zinc roof was replaced and the plasterwork renewed. The two buildings reflect different priorities: the neo-Romanesque reconstruction defines Saint George, while the washhouse’s war damage, restoration, and roof and plasterwork repairs can be distinguished by date.

Ecclesiastical cultural heritage

A chalice and a paten are associated with the sacristy of the Church of Saint George. The chalice bears the inscription “CHARITAS” and the year 1755; since July 22, 1983, both the chalice and paten have been classified as protected movable cultural heritage. The two dates have different meanings: 1755 is part of the chalice’s inscription, while 1983 marks the protected status of both objects.

Mamey: Forest Trails, Monastery Ruins, and a Sinkhole

For a different focus, head to Mamey, 7 km from Bernécourt. At the site of St Jacques, forest trails meet at a crossroads. From there, paths lead to Mamey, St Jean, Lironville, and Limey, as well as to the Pont des Quatre Vaux bridge and on to Regniéville. On a hill beyond, the ruins of a former monastery, once situated on the Way of St James, remain. The Gouffre de la Grimo-Santé is also near Mamey, in a forest between Mamey and St Jean. This very deep sinkhole is popular with cavers. The sites have clearly distinct themes: St Jacques links forest trails and monastery ruins with the Way of St James, while the Gouffre is notable for its landform and caving.

Farm Shop and Farm Inn

Domaine de Saturnin in Bernécourt is both a farm shop and a farm inn. The shop sells poultry, ducks, geese, and products made from them. As a farm inn, the Domaine serves meals and farm-style snacks. If you plan to visit the farm shop specifically, check access arrangements in advance.

Remembrance of the First World War

The former military cemetery on the D904 between Bernicourt and Grosrouvres is associated with French soldiers of the First World War. Together with the damage to the washhouse in September 1914, it reveals another aspect of the same wartime period: the cemetery focuses on the fallen soldiers, while the washhouse recalls the damage to the building and its subsequent restoration.
