Chéronnac forms a distinct travel destination context. Here, a geologically significant protected area, distinctive landscape features, and historic buildings come together. Two routes offer different highlights: the Circuit de la tour Mirabeau is a loop of a specific length, while the Circuit des diligences is defined by the sequence of landscapes along the way. This makes it possible to explore nature, local history, and outdoor activity as distinct themes.

Geology and Landscape in Chéronnac

The Réserve naturelle nationale de l'Astroblème de Rochechouart-Chassenon was designated for its geological heritage; its official area covers 50.00 hectares. Chéronnac is one of the municipalities included in the nature reserve. The Charente also has its source here: it rises in Chéronnac. The protected area and the river’s source represent different aspects of the landscape—the geological heritage on the one hand, and the origin of a river on the other.

The Peyrassoulat site in Chéronnac lies on the banks of the Tardoire. It is designated as a ZNIEFF and is home to exceptional flora. Notable trees there include two plane trees whose branches spread across a width of about forty metres, as well as four yew trees that have stood at this site for more than 500 years. The plane trees stand out for their spread, and the yews for their age: these two distinct features each give the place its own character.

Montoume shows how geology can also be read in building materials. The houses are built of iron-rich impactite; the red stone formed about 200 million years ago when a meteorite struck. Montoume has also been inhabited since the Neolithic period and lies on the Narbonne–Nantes metal route. Geological deep time and human settlement history thus sit side by side—two very different timescales that come together here.

Two Routes, Different Highlights

The Circuit de la tour Mirabeau is a 12.1 km loop starting in Chéronnac. It is designated for hiking and mountain biking. From the trail, you can see the preserved ruin tower of the Château de Mirabeau, with a row of arrow slits. The stated distance offers a clear guide when choosing a loop, while the view of the tower adds a historical connection to the route.

The Circuit des diligences passes through the Parc naturel régional Périgord-Limousin to the village of Les Salles Lavauguyon. Along the way are numerous ponds and the Tardoire Valley. Its landscape differs from that of the Mirabeau loop: here, the succession of ponds and valley, as well as the destination village, take centre stage, while the other route is defined by its set loop distance and the visible tower. Which route best suits your stay depends on whether you would prefer a loop with a clearly stated distance or a route described by the landscapes along the way.

Church Art and History

The Church of Saint-Sauveur in Chéronnac originated as a chapel built on a motte castrale in the 9th century. In the 11th century, it was replaced by a church that remained fortified until the 17th century. This sequence traces the site’s history from an early chapel to a church with a long history of fortification.

The church door features an intricately crafted bolt dating from the 13th century. A 15th-century wall painting depicts a funeral hatchment bearing the coat of arms of Monsieur de Rouziers, Seigneur de Chéronnac. Each detail offers a distinct highlight: the finely crafted door fitting and the painted coat of arms inside the church.

The Château de Mirabeau also adds to the local history. The de Rousiers family built it in the 15th century. It belonged to Marie-Geneviève de Vasson, wife of the Marquis de Mirabeau and a descendant of the lords of La Mothe de Chéronnac. Together with the ruin tower visible from the loop, the château’s history and its presence on the route offer two distinct perspectives on the château.
