Hiking, climbing and architectural history offer different ways to enjoy a stay in Vingrau. Hiking options include a moderately difficult 8.5-kilometre circular route and a trail to the Gouleyrous gorges.

Hiking trails with different focuses

Le Pas de l’Escale is a moderately difficult 8.5-kilometre circular hike that starts in Vingrau. The route crosses the ridges of the Serra and offers 360-degree views of the sea, Roussillon, the Albères, Canigou and the Agly Valley. Its circular route, distance and difficulty give the hike a clear profile; the views take in several named landscapes.

The Du moulin aux Gouleyrous trail also starts in Vingrau and leads to the Gouleyrous gorges. It highlights the old mill and the Caune de l’Arago archaeological site as sights along the way. Geometric-looking vineyards contrast with the free-flowing shapes of the limestone formations and cliffs. The two trails therefore differ not only in their destinations, but also in their focus: one is a loop over the ridges of the Serra, while the other leads to the gorges and their named sights and landscapes.

Climbing in the Fenouillèdes–Vingrau area

For climbers, the Fenouillèdes–Vingrau area is a focus in its own right. It has around 450 routes, ranging from single-pitch routes to multi-pitch routes up to 150 metres long. Adventure climbing is permitted in the climbing area. The variety of route formats clearly distinguishes this activity from the two hikes. If climbing is to be your main activity, you will find a wide choice of routes here; the approximate number and maximum length stated indicate their scale and reach.

Sacred architectural history and a restored washhouse

The former church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption has a Romanesque apse and a Romanesque northwestern corner. The rest was rebuilt and extended in the 18th century; the church is no longer in use today. The current parish church of Notre Dame de l’Assomption houses an altarpiece attributed to Louis Généré, created between 1681 and 1683. The two buildings thus represent different aspects of sacred architectural history: Romanesque elements and later building phases in one case, and a dated altarpiece in the other.

The Chapel of Notre Dame du Bon Conseil dates from 1860 and contains a depiction of the Virgin and Child. The restored washhouse is a different kind of landmark: it stands on a street at the edge of the old town. Together, these places offer different points of interest, from Romanesque elements and a dated work of art to the chapel and the washhouse.

When planning your trip, you can consider each focus separately: a circular hike with a stated distance and panoramic views, a trail to the gorges, a climbing area with a variety of route formats, or buildings with different historical associations.
