At the confluence of the Brangoly and Angoustrine, the Rahur River begins, marking the border between France and Spain here. Sunny meadows surround Ur. The river and border thus meet an open meadow landscape. There are also hiking trails and a village setting with wooden galleries and solid walls.
Village Scenery and Architecture
The village is characterised by wide wooden galleries. Large homes are surrounded by solid perimeter walls. The galleries and walls create contrasting accents: in some places, wood shapes the houses; elsewhere, solid walls enclose large homes. Alongside the landscape and border trails, the architecture is another distinctive aspect of the village.
Saint-Martin Church
Saint-Martin Church in Ur preserves the most interesting choir termination in Cerdagne from the first period of Romanesque art. Its rich furnishings range from the 16th century to the Baroque period. The choir termination and furnishings offer different insights: into the church’s Romanesque classification and into a collection of furnishings spanning several centuries. Visits can be arranged on request through the town hall; check the arrangements in advance.
Hiking Along the Border
The PR 11 hiking trail, “Par-delà la frontière,” is an easy out-and-back hike of 8.9 km, taking two hours. It starts at the car park by Ur church. The 8.9 km refers to the round trip, not a one-way walk. Access conditions may vary; check them before setting out.
A walk from the church leads to LlĂvia, the Spanish enclave on French territory. On the border hike starting from Ur, hikers can also see some of the 602 border markers numbered from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. This makes both a specific destination and the markers themselves a focus of the border theme.
Fishing on the Rahur
The Parcours de Pays du Rahur offers 800 m of fishable water along the right bank, where you can fish for brown trout. The fishing stretch is easy to access and clearly signposted. Its length, riverbank and fish species define the offer.
Horse-Riding Activities and an October Event
The Centre Equestre du Belloc in Ur offers trail rides, riding lessons and riding courses. Trail rides are listed as lasting one hour, two hours or half a day. These three time options give you a range of choices for planning; they apply to trail rides, not to riding lessons or courses. Baby pony activities are also available for children aged two and over. Check dates and availability in advance.
October is also relevant for horse-related activities: Ur’s international horse fair takes place every year in this month. Check the specific event dates for the year in question before travelling so you can plan accordingly.
