Tordères combines traces of local architectural and artistic history with a natural area covering a significant share of the municipal territory. At Église Sant Nazari, evidence of a Romanesque church meets a 13th-century bell tower; a polychrome altarpiece adds a work of art from 1749 to the church’s story. Nearby, the ZNIEFF Massif des Aspres draws attention to the landscape and its biodiversity. This provides concrete themes to guide your travel plans: local history and sacred art, as well as the makeup of the natural area.

Romanesque traces and sacred art

Église Sant Nazari preserves traces of a Romanesque church. Its bell tower dates from the 13th century and has the appearance of a defensive tower. Its date provides a specific point of reference, while its defensive-tower-like form is another architectural feature. The polychrome altarpiece, a multicoloured altar screen in the church, was completed in 1749. It adds a dated work of art and another aspect of sacred furnishings to the building’s history.

The processional statue known as Sant Nazari also forms part of local history. It was donated to the municipality and installed at Église Sant Nazari. During its restoration, overpainting was removed, and its hand and feather were reattached. Its history therefore includes both its donation and installation, as well as specific work carried out on the figure. The village is first mentioned in 899 under the name villa Tordarias. Taken together, the timeline stretches from this early local history to the 13th-century bell tower and the altarpiece completed in 1749.

Landscape and natural area

The type II ZNIEFF “Massif des Aspres” (No. 6614-0000) covers 50 percent of the municipal territory of Tordères. Its landscape includes forests, maquis and garrigue. Another specific area figure concerns the Forêt domaniale du Réart state forest, which covers 108 hectares in Tordères. These figures refer to different areas: 50 percent refers to the municipal territory, while 108 hectares refers to the state forest within Tordères. Thus, a share of the municipal territory and the extent of a named forest are presented side by side, without implying that the two figures measure the same thing.

The species inventory for the ZNIEFF includes 41 notable plant species, 16 bird species, 3 reptile species, 3 bat species, 13 insect species and 1 mollusc species. These inventory figures may change as knowledge of biodiversity grows. Together with the landscape features, they offer another way to explore the natural area: alongside its share of the municipal territory are the different species groups recorded in the inventory.

A donkey workshop

La Ferme aux Ânes de Tordères offers an educational workshop on keeping and handling donkeys, as well as accompanying them on hikes. The activity brings together animal care and hiking in a practical way. If you would like to include the workshop in your travel plans, confirm its current availability before travelling.
