Taurinya combines church history with trails ranging from a municipal mining path to challenging mountain climbs. When planning your trip, it is worth noting these differences: the Sentier des Mines is 3.7 km long, while other routes are described as difficult or as having 1,520 m of elevation gain. This lets you balance your cultural and hiking interests and choose excursions that suit your stay.

Church History and Architectural Styles

Taurinya’s parish church, dedicated to Saint Fructuosus, is documented as a possession of the Abbey of Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa between 845 and 855; King Lothair confirmed this ownership. The present nave and bell tower were built during renovations in the 12th century. The early history of the church’s ownership and its later architectural features therefore belong to different periods in the church’s history.

The surviving Chapel of Saint-Valentin in Corts also offers a glimpse of historic architectural styles. It probably dates from the 12th century and has a single-nave layout with a semicircular apse. It was built on the foundations of a signal tower dating from the 11th century. Another cultural landmark in Taurinya is the home of the renowned ceramic artist François Miro.

Pastoral Farming and Mining

The former pastoral farming site of Llasseres lies within the municipality of Taurinya at an elevation of 1,200 to 1,500 m. Access is challenging; the Les Costes and Ramá routes lead there from Taurinya. Several dry-stone structures have survived, including livestock enclosures and shepherds’ huts. Llasseres therefore highlights a different historic activity from the mining site of Salver: pastoral farming and its buildings in one place, and ore transport, furnaces and former miners’ accommodation in the other.

The municipal Sentier des Mines is 3.7 km long and marked in yellow. It reaches Salver along an old ore-transport route and offers panoramic views over the Taurinya valley and the gorges of the Litera. At the mining site, a 100 m-long sloping section leads to the furnaces and former miners’ accommodation. Information panels about Salver stand along much of the trail. The route thus combines scenic views with insights into the area’s mining history.

Choosing Hikes by Distance and Elevation Gain

Les Balcons de Taurinya is a difficult circular hike that starts in Taurinya. It is 12 km long and marked with GR and PR trail signs. The Sentier de Llasera et du Roc Mosquit also starts in Taurinya; this ascent has an elevation gain of 1,520 m. The footpath from Taurinya to the Refuge des Cortalets passes through Llasseres, Roc Mosquit, Soucarrade and Ras des Cortalets.

The trail information answers different planning questions: for the Sentier des Mines, the key detail is its 3.7 km distance; for Les Balcons, it is the 12 km circular route and its difficult rating; and for the ascent to Roc Mosquit, it is the elevation gain. So compare more than just distances, and take difficulty and elevation profile into account when planning. Check trail conditions, markings and access locally before setting out.

Getting Your Bearings Locally

An Info-Rando point near the grocery shop in Taurinya serves day visitors and those staying longer. If you plan to use it for directions, check its exact location locally. It is also a good idea to check current trail conditions, especially if you are planning the challenging approaches to Llasseres or the mountain hikes.
