At an altitude of 540 m, Sournia lies in the mid-mountains; the La Désix flows through the village. Historic churches and chapels are a cultural highlight, while the wooded surroundings of Chapelle Saint-Michel also make it a destination for walks.
Churches, Chapels and Architectural History
The ruins of the former Saint-Michel church were classified as a historic monument by decree on 2 August 1965. Its main nave is thought to date from before 950 and is attributed to Visigothic architecture in the Mediterranean Pyrenees. The Ancienne église Sainte-Félicité was also classified as a historic monument by the same decree; it is thought to have been built shortly after 950.
The Eglise paroissiale de la nativité de Notre Dame reflects a different chronology: its choir is decorated with 17th-century stuccowork, while the altarpieces date from the 18th century. These dates therefore refer to two different elements of the church’s furnishings. In 1874, the Grotte du Menié was converted into a chapel by Monsieur Mir, the parish priest of Sournia. This makes the specifically dated conversion another part of the village’s architectural history.
The Chapelle Saint Laurent d’Arsa has a single nave and lies 500 m north of the ruins of Château d’Arsa. It houses a 13th-century statue of the Virgin Mary. A single-nave church has one nave; this architectural form is a distinct feature alongside its location and furnishings. The Château of Sournia dates from 1537. The 500 m distance refers to the ruins of Château d’Arsa, while the date 1537 refers to the Château of Sournia.
La Désix and Walks
The La Désix River is 32.3 km long, rises near the Col d’Aussières and flows into the Agly at Ansignan. Along with Sournia’s altitude and the endpoints mentioned, the river can be seen as a distinct landscape feature alongside the historic buildings: from its source area near the Col d’Aussières to its mouth at Ansignan.
Several paths lead to Chapelle Saint-Michel through heavily wooded surroundings, making it a destination for walks. The paths are therefore part of planning a visit, just like the destination itself. Check local access conditions before setting out for a walk.
Summer Market and Equestrian Centre
During the summer season, a small market featuring local producers is held on Place de l’Aire on Thursday mornings. If you would like to include the market in your stay, check the date in advance, as the schedule may change.
Sournia is home to the Le Ranch « Cheval loisirs en pleine nature » equestrian centre. If you are planning a visit, check in advance what is currently available, as the offerings may change. For horse enthusiasts, the equestrian centre is another distinct option to consider when planning a trip.
