The Pont de Reynès is both an engineering structure and a memorial site; mountain trails and the valley mines complement its cultural focus with hiking and industrial history. Reynes therefore offers a range of different interests: architecture, remembrance, a marked mountain hike or nature.

Bridge history and remembrance

The Pont de Reynès was built in 1895 as a combined road and railway bridge. It is of the Eiffel type and has a wrought-iron deck girder. Its construction year, function, design and material each offer a specific way to understand the structure. At the same time, the bridge is a memorial site commemorating the ambush of a German convoy on 19 August 1944. The two dates refer to different things: 1895 marks the construction, while 19 August 1944 is the date of the event being commemorated. The Pont de Reynès thus brings together engineering history and a precisely dated historical memory.

Mountain trails and traces of mining

The marked “De Château en Château” trail is 19 kilometres long. It passes through the Salines massif to the Collada dels Pous and the Roc de Fraussa at an altitude of 1,450 metres. The route connects Maçanet de Cabrenys and Reynès via mountain paths. The distance, named destinations and elevation are separate points of reference for planning: 19 kilometres describes the route, while 1,450 metres is the altitude of the Roc de Fraussa. Seasonal conditions can change. Check trail access and conditions locally before setting out.

Another hike leads to the valley mines. It reveals the remains of old steam engines, an old 4CV and ore buckets still suspended in the air. Its industrial focus sets it apart from the history of the Pont de Reynès: here, the emphasis is on relics associated with mining, while there it is on a bridge and its commemorative significance. The entrance to the valley mines is blocked for safety reasons. Check local safety information again before visiting.

Woodland and waterside relaxation

A cool, shady beech forest lies on the northern slope of the Roc de France. The area around the Roc de France provides a refuge for many animal species seeking peace and quiet. Alongside the architectural and industrial heritage, visitors can therefore choose nature-related interests such as a distinctive woodland landscape and the area’s importance to wildlife.

The Théâtre de verdure at the Pont de Reynès is a waterside spot where you can relax amid the vegetation. Its use may depend on local conditions. This place offers a different focus from a hike: rather than a marked route or historical relics, it centres on water, vegetation and relaxation.

Plan your stay around your interests

When choosing what interests you about your trip, it helps to consider the differences: the Pont de Reynès combines engineering history and remembrance, “De Château en Château” is a mountain route with a clearly stated distance, and the hike to the valley mines is defined by its industrial relics.
