Prades combines remarkable architectural history with two very different hiking options. When planning your trip, it helps to consider the cultural sites and the characteristics of each route separately: the Église Saint-Pierre and Maison Jacomet represent different architectural styles and periods; when it comes to hiking, the Canal de Bohère and the Itinéraire des Belvédères differ in length, route and difficulty.

Architectural History and Architecture

The Église Saint-Pierre was built in the 17th century on the foundations of a Romanesque church. Today, only the 12th-century Lombard bell tower remains from that earlier church. Inside, a large nave and fourteen chapels flanking it on both sides shape the architectural layout. The church thus reveals different periods of construction: its Romanesque origins, the surviving tower and the later church building.

The Maison Jacomet is a different example of architecture. It is the only surviving example in Prades today of a bourgeois house with timber framing and overhanging upper floors. In this style, the upper floors extend beyond those below; it was particularly common in the 16th century. The Maison Jacomet is already mentioned in a register from 1504. The date places the mention of the house in its historical context, while its architectural style offers a distinct point of comparison with the church.

Cultural Sites and Collections

The Espace Casals is located on the first floor of the Médiathèque Pompeu Fabra. Independent visits are available free of charge. The materials on display include recordings from 1925 to 1960, authentic letters, the original orchestral score of “Pessebre,” interview tapes, films, paintings and sculptures. Works by artists from Prades are also on display. The collection therefore ranges from audio recordings and personal documents to visual art. Individual presentations and access information may change; check the details before your visit.

The Trésor de l’église Saint-Pierre is set up as a genuine museum and is free to visit. If you include both places in your cultural itinerary, they differ not only in their connection to the church or the Médiathèque Pompeu Fabra, but also in their focus: the Trésor is the main attraction here, while the Espace Casals, with its wide range of materials, is the focus there. Check the latest access information before visiting.

Another cultural site is the Espace Martin Vivès, a cultural centre that opened in 2015. It is dedicated to the Roussillon painter Martin Vivès, who was born in Prades in 1905. This dedication links the cultural centre to an artist whose hometown is Prades, complementing the architectural and collection-related themes with a local connection between a painter and the city.

Hiking: Route, Length and Difficulty

The Canal de Bohère crosses the heights of Prades and runs behind Stade Clément Padrixe; for the most part, it is uncovered. The canal is 42 kilometres long. A historical hiking description follows its route from Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa. Conditions may vary along different sections, so it is a good idea to find out about your chosen section in advance.

The “Itinéraire des Belvédères – Les Balcons Nord du Canigó” starts in Prades. The route is classified as difficult and covers 68 kilometres over eight stages between Millas and Prades. Route information, markings and access may change; check them before setting out. The two options therefore differ in more than just length: the Canal de Bohère hike is described historically and conditions vary by section, while the Belvédères route is classified as difficult and divided into stages.

When looking for hotels in Prades, you can first decide whether you want to focus on architectural history and cultural sites or on one of the hikes. For the routes, length, number of stages and difficulty provide different points of reference for planning. This helps you choose based on your interests without treating the two hiking options as similar tours.
