Bolquère combines winter sports in the Bolquère Pyrénées 2000 ski area with a family-friendly loop trail around Étang du Ticou; the Church of Sainte-Eulalie adds architectural history to the picture. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the different highlights: ski runs, various types of trails and a cultural and historical focus. In addition to the loop around the Étang, a hiking trail runs from Bolquère / Eyne station to Lac du Ticou. You can therefore plan your stay around whether winter sports, a specific hike or local history takes priority.
Ski Area and Nature Park
The Bolquère Pyrénées 2000 ski area has 41 kilometres of ski runs. In the La Calme sector, there are ridge runs described as panoramic and sunny. The length of the runs and the character of the sector answer different questions: the figure describes the extent of the ski area, while La Calme focuses on a specific area and its ridge runs. Bolquère – Pyrénées 2000 is located in the Pyrénées Catalanes Regional Natural Park. This puts a named sector within the ski area and the town’s location in the regional nature park side by side as two distinct points of reference.
Loop Trail around Étang du Ticou
The hiking loop around Étang du Ticou is suitable for families. It can also be explored by mountain bike and, in winter, on snowshoes. The route offers views of the Cambre d'Aze massif, the Eyne Valley and the Puigmal massif. Two views of massifs and one of a valley give the loop its own scenic appeal, alongside its range of uses. A winter stay therefore offers two different types of activity: ski runs in the ski area and snowshoeing on the loop.
Compare the Trails
Another type of trail is the hiking route from Bolquère / Eyne station to Lac du Ticou. It passes through the village and the ski resort. This identifies the starting point, destination and two sections along the way. Unlike the hiking loop around Étang du Ticou, this is a route between two points; the Étang trail, by contrast, is defined by its loop format. The GR 10 also runs through Bolquère – Pyrénées 2000, adding another named route to the trail options.
Church and Architectural History
The Church of Sainte-Eulalie de Bolquère adds architectural history to the sporting and scenic highlights. It stands on the site of a former castle. The surviving square tower was reused as the base of the present-day bell tower. The current church was built mainly in the 17th and 18th centuries, with extensions continuing into the 19th century. The building thus brings together its location on a former castle site, the reuse of the tower and several phases of construction. If you would also like to plan your trip around historic buildings, the church is a clearly defined cultural landmark.
