Fine sand and a pedestrian promenade provide a clear setting for a beach day at Plage Centre; during the summer season, supervised swimming areas are available there. When looking for a holiday rental, it can help to first decide what matters most to you: swimming, walks, nature or history. Argelès-Plage offers a range of themes, from beaches to historical walking tours.

A beach day at Plage Centre and Plage Nord

At Plage Centre, you can swim, enjoy water sports and play on the beach. The beach has a large area of fine sand, suitable for relaxing and beach activities. During the summer season, supervised swimming areas are available. Other practical features include a pedestrian promenade, several car parks, and shops and restaurants nearby. Lifeguard supervision is seasonal; parking and business services may change.

Plage Nord (Marenda) has a different focus: the beach is surrounded by dunes that are important to the local ecosystem. Windsurfing and light dinghies are permitted in part of the area; local seasonal or safety rules may apply. There is also a large free car park with an unpaved surface. Parking arrangements may change.

Coastal paths and nature in the surrounding area

Nearby, the Mas Larrieu Nature Reserve lies at the mouth of the Tech River. It provides a refuge for numerous animal and plant species. The guided nature walk at Mas Larrieu starts at Plage Nord and covers 2.6 km. The schedule and route of the municipal activity may change; check the current arrangements before planning your walk.

Within the municipality, the Sentier littoral includes a 3 km section from Racou to Plage de l’Ouille. It takes about 45 minutes and is suitable for occasional walkers and children. The route was changed in 2026; check the current arrangements before setting out. This section of the Sentier is 0.4 km longer than the 2.6 km guided nature walk.

Walking tour and historical remembrance

The municipal walking tour “Raconte-moi la plage” explains how Argelès-Plage came into being and how the area developed from the 1870s onwards. It starts at the Argelès-Plage Tourist Office on Place de l’Europe. The programme and starting arrangements may change; check the latest details before your visit.

Argelès beach was designated at short notice as a reception area, which in practice became an internment camp. The Mémorial du Camp presents the history of the former camp through interactive scenography, audiovisual eyewitness accounts and archival documents. The presentation may change.

Water sports at the beach

Club de Plage Emeraude offers pedal boats with slides, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing, funboarding and wingfoiling. These activities may be seasonal. At Plage Nord, windsurfing and light dinghies are permitted only in part of the area; the club’s offerings and this local regulation are therefore separate aspects of planning water sports.

When choosing a holiday rental, you can use your interests as a starting point: beach conditions vary, walks have their own route details, and the historical tour follows a programme that may change. This lets you shape your plans around the themes that matter to you during your stay.
