Saint-Alban-sur-Limagnole can be explored through its trails and history: the GR65, the Way of St. James, crosses the commune from north to south. There is also a historic walking loop, a 40-minute journey through the history of the Margeride, and routes to the Cascade du Franquet and the Étang de la Rouvière. When planning a trip, it is useful to understand the differences between these options: clearly stated durations are provided alongside trails whose destinations or themes each offer a distinct focus.

On foot: the Way of St. James and local history

The GR65 crosses Saint-Alban-sur-Limagnole from north to south. For those who want to explore local history as well as follow this trail, there is the Historic Loop of Saint-Alban-sur-Limagnole. This very easy walking loop has eleven historical stops. Its one-hour duration and 58 metres of elevation gain provide concrete figures for planning your day; the stops make local history the thread running through the route.

The Scénovision de St Alban also focuses on history, but in a different format: its 40-minute journey introduces the history of the Margeride. For planning purposes, the two durations can be compared: one hour for the historic walking loop and 40 minutes for the journey through time. In terms of content, the experiences differ: one is a loop with historical stops, while the other is a journey through the history of the Margeride.

Water destinations and mountain biking routes

The Cascade du Franquet is fed by the Limagnole River. A marked trail behind the hospital leads to the waterfall and can be reached on foot or by mountain bike. The Le Franquet – MTB Route No. 21 also starts in Saint-Alban-sur-Limagnole and includes a there-and-back ride to the Cascade. The waterfall is therefore a focal point of both the marked trail and a mountain biking route.

The L'étang de la Rouvière – MTB Route No. 22 offers a different perspective on the landscape. It leads from Saint-Alban-sur-Limagnole through pastures and forests to the Étang de la Rouvière, showcasing its flora and fauna. The designated parking for this route is at Place du Breuil, by the town hall. Unlike the Cascade route, this one focuses on the pond and the landscape along the way.

The Les Fours à Pain – MTB Route No. 23 offers a cultural focus: it leads to typical Margeride villages where bread ovens and other elements of small-scale heritage can be discovered as reminders of former village life. The three mountain biking routes thus differ not only in name but also in their stated focus: a waterfall, a pond landscape or rural heritage.

Church, château and history

The parish church of Saint-Alban was listed as a historic monument by decree dated 19 November 1985. Its oldest part is the choir, with an apse topped by a semi-dome vault. Another distinctive feature is the two-storey bell gable with arcades. The choir, apse and bell gable offer different architectural details to look out for when viewing the church.

The Château de Saint-Alban-sur-Limagnole also brings together several historical periods: it is mentioned as early as the 12th century, rebuilt in the 15th century and converted into a psychiatric hospital in 1821. The tourist office is housed in the Renaissance château. Its beautiful courtyard hosts temporary exhibitions and events. The château’s history and the courtyard’s present-day use bring different points of interest to the local scene.
