Le Malzieu-Ville combines a medieval townscape with themes ranging from pilgrimage history to nature watching. The medieval town lies on the banks of the Truyère. Its historic character is shaped by cobbled lanes, fortified towers, town walls and restored gates. This gives you a range of options when planning your stay: architectural history and art, events, or activities in the Margeride.
Medieval lanes and local history
The Centre historique du Malzieu walking tour presents local heritage and notable figures through 27 information panels. The historic walking tour of Le Malzieu-Ville also covers themes from different periods: the Middle Ages, the Wars of Religion, the Bête du Gévaudan and the Maquis du Mont-Mouchet. The historical perspective therefore extends beyond the architecture of the medieval town to include other chapters in the area's history.
The history of pilgrimage is also connected with the landscape. Le Malzieu was a stop for pilgrims arriving from Le Puy-en-Velay along the Way of St James. They crossed the Truyère at Pont Notre-Dame and continued towards Aubrac. The bridge and river mark a specific stretch of this historic route.
Sacred art takes centre stage at the Musée de l'ancien couvent des Ursulines: the permanent collection includes liturgical vestments and objects. The museum spans three levels featuring wall paintings. The Rencontres Musicales du Malzieu offer another cultural facet, with classical music at their heart.
Seasonal events
The Médiévales du Malzieu take place every year over the Ascension weekend. The Trail Margeride is also an annual event: it falls on the second weekend of September and includes four races and a hike. The events therefore differ both in timing and in focus. If you would like to plan your trip around an edition, check the dates for the year in question.
The Truyère, wildlife and trails in the Margeride
Numerous local and migratory bird species have been recorded at the Plan d'eau de la Truyère. The water area is also home to the otter. The surrounding area is ideal for walks and discovering wild nature. If you would like to combine culture and landscape in your plans, this offers a different focus from the town's historic lanes and collections.
For a longer hiking route, take the GRP Tour de la Margeride – La Boucle du Malzieu: this 42-kilometre circular route passes through the northern part of Lozère, in the heart of the Margeride. The Via-Ferrata du Malzieu offers another way to experience the landscape, with views over the Truyère gorges. It has two physical difficulty levels and is suitable for both beginners and experienced via ferrata climbers.
The via ferrata is freely accessible year-round; check the access conditions on site before using it. From Le Malzieu, follow the RD 47 for 700 metres towards Saint-Léger-du-Malzieu, then take the first road on the left towards Le Ranc.
Another way to discover the Margeride is to go horse riding with La Cavale du Malzieu. Rides start in the medieval hamlet of Le Malzieu-Ville. La Cavale offers ponies for hire for young children. So, as well as hiking and the via ferrata, horse riding is another activity to choose from.
