In Ispagnac, Romanesque architecture and craftsmanship meet trails through gardens, forests and vineyards. When planning your trip, you can choose different focuses: a stay in early August can be planned around the annual pottery market; for outdoor activities, there are routes through a variety of landscapes.

Culture, craftsmanship and local history

The annual pottery market, held in early August, features 25 professional ceramicists. Free demonstrations showcase their craftsmanship. If you are planning your trip around the market, check the dates for the upcoming edition.

The Church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul is a Romanesque building dating from the 12th century. A sound and light show invites visitors to explore its interior. Before planning a visit, check whether the show is taking place. This allows you to make the church visit a cultural highlight in its own right, alongside the historical traces preserved elsewhere in Ispagnac.

These traces include the remains of medieval fortifications, including towers and gates. The former château also tells a story of architectural change: it was largely rebuilt and now houses the Ursuline convent. A notable stone staircase has been preserved. The church, the remains of the fortifications and the former château thus each offer a different perspective on the town’s history.

Landscape and trails

The Site Patrimonial Remarquable helps preserve the landscapes of the valley at the entrance to the classified area of the Gorges du Tarn and the Jonte. Its protected status dates from 17 December 2007; in 2016, it replaced the former ZPPAUP. This protection framework gives the landscape a distinct place alongside the historic buildings.

The trails vary in the landscapes they pass through and in their character. Le tour d’Ispagnac – Trail n°41 passes through vegetable gardens and along the Tarn. It is also a short hike of a few kilometres on the heights of Ispagnac, considered not difficult. Rocher des Fées – Trail n°43 also starts in Ispagnac, but offers a different experience: the route passes through forests, to open viewpoints, through hamlets and along streams. Conditions on both routes may vary depending on the season.

For a mountain biking outing, Les jardins d’Ispagnac – VTT n°3 runs through the gardens and vineyards of the villages of Ispagnac and Quézac to the Tarn. On a larger regional scale, the Tarn runs through a gorge for 53 kilometres from Ispagnac to Le Rozier. This describes the course of the river and offers a different perspective from the individual trails around Ispagnac.

Regional character and orientation

The valley of Ispagnac was called the “Jardin de la Lozère” because of its abundance of fruit, varied vegetables, wine and golden grapes.

As of August 2026, the Ispagnac tourist information office is accessible to people with motor disabilities. To plan your trip, compare the route descriptions based on the landscape experience you want: Trail n°41 combines gardens and the Tarn with a short hike on the heights; Trail n°43 features forests, viewpoints, hamlets and streams; and the mountain bike route passes through gardens and vineyards to the river. When choosing your travel dates, also consider whether the pottery market in early August is of interest to you.
